TWO youth parliamentary candidates have pledged to work together to secure the best future for youngsters in Great Yarmouth, regardless of the result of the National Youth Parliament election this week.
TWO youth parliamentary candidates have pledged to work together to secure the best future for youngsters in Great Yarmouth, regardless of the result of the National Youth Parliament election this week.
Naveen Rizvi, 17, of Gorleston was elected to represent Yarmouth on the parliament winning by 65 votes. She polled 768 votes and her opponent 16-year-old Harry Webb, of north Yarmouth polled 703 votes.
Naveen, who attends Norwich High School for Girls, has studied politics at school and had work experience with north Norfolk MP Norman Lamb. She wants to learn more about how politics can influence the local community and what agencies are available within the area.
Her manifesto for youngsters in the Yarmouth area included the introduction of discount cards for students on buses and more youth centres to provide children with more activities.
Harry, who attends Yarmouth High School, decided to stand as a candidate thanks to teachers at his school, who stoked his interest in politics. He pledged to work with a youth council being formed in Yarmouth, which will have one representative from each school in the borough and to support Naveen's pledge for more youth centres.
He said: “Every young person has a right to be heard and we are here to ensure those views are heard.”
Naveen added: “Politics is not just about adult. It is about students who want to be heard in the community. We want their views and requests to be put into action.”
