Toby the Tortoise, who went missing two weeks ago, has been found safe and well.

An appeal to ask people to watch out for the 54-year-old reptile was placed on the Mercury’s Facebook page and in the paper in the hope of returning him to his elderly owner.

He had been out enjoying the fresh air in the back of his home in Westerley Way, Caister when he went missing.

However, all’s well that ends well, and a friend of Toby’s owner told the Mercury last night: “Well! Early this evening the lady who owns the tortoise phoned and said Toby has been found alive and well but possibly feeling rather cold.

“It turns out he was found in one of his favourite spots in her garden and it appears he may have part-buried himself into the soil and undergrowth, as he appeared to be covered in soil and looking rather dirty.

“He’s now back inside her home, in the warm again.”

We love a happy ending…
