Thetford 37, Broadland-Great Yarmouth 5

BROADLAND-Great Yarmouth travelled to a second pre-season warm-up, against another team playing in the league above which provided younger players with experience playing against strong opposition.

Thetford scored the first try. Broadland held firm in the scrum and centres Sam Noon and Mark White both had hard runs in the middle. There was some textbook tackling from Dixon and Towfighi.

Thetford scored another try on the wing. Broadland's wing Jake Sewell and Tristan Barber both made good ground. Full back Brad Sutherland put in some excellent work with solid support from French and Royce. Broadland were awarded a penalty 15m from the goalline. Quick thinking captain Matt Beckett sparked a move involving Asa Morrison and Richard Bristo, who scored (unconverted).

Broadland did string some solid attacking play together, young scrum half Phil Buckley distributing the ball well, complemented by a maturing Ash Lightfoot at fly half. Thetford moved the game up a gear after the half Broadland's line out was good with hooker George Jarvis growing increasingly comfortable in the role. Broadland brought on young players Andy Hewitt and Ryan Gallie who immediately got involved in the thick of the action, but Thetford slowly took the game out of contention.

Broadland can take much from the game in terms of experience as they head towards league rugby in mid September with a very young side. Broadland has seen a dramatic change in its last four years and has seen the average age of a first team player reduce from 30 years in the 2004/05 season to 22 for the start of this season.
