L&Y, as is their way, took time to settle and Cantabs started the stronger particularly in the line-out which caused L and Y some problems. They were kept away from the visitors' try line by the big hitting back row of Lewis Davey, McElroy and number eight Marc Thomas. The penalty count was high against L&Y, particularly in the ruck area and the coaching team will address this during training this week. Cantabs had two penalty attempts to take the lead but failed and allowed L&Y to start and take the game to the home side. The last 20 minutes of the first half were played in the hosts' half of the pitch.

The L&Y score came from a well-taken line-out by Simon Coleman and the ensuing driving maul saw the influential Thomas ground the ball for a try. L&Y were unlucky not to increase their lead before the whistle.

After some stern half-time words from player coach Scott Nelson and skipper Davey

L&Y were made fully aware of what was required in the second half. They started the half with fire in the bellies and had Cantabs struggling to deal with the kicking game of fly-half Clarke.

L&Y's second try came following some bullocking runs upfield from Wayne Nixon, Chris Howe and Graeme Newton to bring L&Y within five metres of the line. The ball came free and scrum- half Russ Chapman fed to Scott Nelson who smashed his way through the grasping defence to score. Clarke converted.

Almost immediately, L&Y made a breakthrough. From a ruck Cantabs were penalised and Clarke stepped up and slotted over the kick. Soon after Clarke repeated the feat and extended the lead to 18.

Cantabs never gave up but solid defence from back-liners of Tom Smith, Kristen Taylor Crisp and Matt Howell kept them at bay.

L&Y kept the try of the day until the last minute. They started a move from a scrum in their own half. The ball went to Clarke who dummied and fed to the rampaging Howell who cut through and slipped the ball to Kris Nelson who ran in from 22 metres to touch down under the posts. Clarke converted.
