ROLLESBY entertained Beccles A last weekend and finally achieved their first Norfolk Cricket League Division One win in 23 attempts.

This followed the previous week's brief match at Great Witchingham.

Travelling to Walis Park on a damp day, Rollesby were inserted by the home skipper and on what looked like an excellent batting track they could only muster 91 which was never likely to be competitive.

Only two Rollesby batsmen managed double figures C Alger (52) and A Chaney (12). This was due to some fine bowling by the Mears and Roper, helped in part by their umpire.

The reply was brutal with Witchingham's newly-arrived overseas player Calkin smashing the ball to all parts in a rapid 74 not out. Young Brady England took the only wicket to fall as the hosts reached their target of 92 in only 11.3 overs. On the plus side the early finish did allow more drinking time. Flegg KA man-of-the-match: C Alger for his 52.

This weekend, however, Rollesby did finally manage to win a game in Division One, beating a young Beccles side by three wickets.

Rollesby skipper Alger won the toss and invited Beccles to bat first.

The Rollesby opening pair of Cook and J Flett bowled an excellent opening spell but it wasn't until the 12th over that James made the initial break through bowling Barber for nine.

A second wicket soon followed with Hunter being well caught at slip by S Alger, again off the bowling of J Flett.

N Flett was next to strike, picking up the wicket of Wright but Clarke at the other end was starting to strike the ball well and soon hit both N Flett and B England out of the attack.

At this point skipper Alger brought himself into the attack having struggled with the ball this season it was a surprise when he found some rhythm. In his second over he accounted for Allen (6) and Fisher (0) in consecutive balls.

Clarke, at the other end, was still going well until having just passed 50 he was trapped in front by Cook, much to his disappointment.

Only Warnes offered any further resistance until he was the final wicket to fall for 34 becoming Alger's sixth victim as Beccles were all out for 164. Special mention to J Browning, who after being coaxed out of retirement held onto two fine slip catches.

The Rollesby reply started in the worst possible fashion and after 10 overs the score was 20 for five.

J Browning and C Alger began to repair the innings until Alger was bowled off his pad for 25.

Cook came in and continued the good work with Browning who was rolling back the years. Together they looked to pick up the singles and rotate the strike but also put away any bad balls.

The pair took the score to 120 when Browning was caught at cover for 34, having shown no signs of his years out of the game.

Rollesby now required 45 from 14 overs with J Flett joining Cook in the middle. This pair continued to rotate the strike and gradually push Rollesby towards their target.

Eventually, with three overs to spare, Rollesby won at the 23rd attempt in division one. Excellent batting from Cook 42 not out and Flett 16 not out and Browning had seen them to their target.
