On a glorious sunny day at Godmanchester the high spirits in the Great Yarmouth camp after a bright start to the season were quickly dented as a shocking opening 35 minutes brought them crashing back down to earth.

Within the first 10 minutes the Bloaters had conceded a penalty after Aidy Ager’s attempted clearance was miscued.

Young debutant goalkeeper Marty Bone brought down the home player for a clear spot-kick which was duly tucked away.

A second goal arrived on 15 minutes this time from a cross from the opposite side which an unmarked Simon Unwin, who had just signed from Histon, latched onto it.

With the Bloaters hardly able to take a breath the rampant home side further punished them when some poor defending between Howell and Applegate allowed Unwin to muscle his way between them for his second and Godmanchester’s third.

On 35 minutes as the Bloaters’ bench were preparing a change to revert to 4-4-2 the game was put out of sight from a corner. The fantastic Aaron Mackay rose above everyone at the far post and waiting on the line for another unmarked header and probably the quickest hat-trick he will score was debutant Unwin.

The double substitution of Forbes and Davis was then able to happen and Yarmouth, now playing four at the back, were able to consolidate until half-time with the introduction of Savage and Palmer who took up both fullback slots.

With the half-time team talk still ringing in their ears Town came out looking like a different side in the second half, showing great character to reduce the arrears and going close to further reducing the areas.

Aaron Sanders grabbed his third of the season from the penalty spot to make it 4-1 and he then found himself bearing down on goal with only the keeper to beat and Holmes square to him but the decision to go it alone on the angle meant the young stopper was equal to his shot.

Soon after Sanders chased down a through ball from substitute Holmes and rounded the keeper but a covering defender managed to intercept.

The game finished 4-1 following a much-improved second half performance against a very talented Godmanchester side who will do well this season with Mackay and Unwin in their ranks.
