Newmarket Town 5 Great Yarmouth Town 1

Yarmouth Town had their biggest league defeat of the season inflicted upon them on Tuesday night after a second half scoring spree from high-flying Newmarket Town.

Manager Mike Derbyshire was forced into changes from the 5-2 win at Swaffham a week before, with Joel Watts, Josh Thomas and Neil McMorran unavailable, but in came George Barnden and Charlie McAra from injuries and Callum Jones from suspension. Rorie Burnett replacing Leighton Crux in the starting line-up was the only unforced change.

Yarmouth created their first chance after eight minutes, Burnett shooting wide after Mitch Forbes won the ball by haranguing the Newmarket back line. In fact, that was the signature of Yarmouth’s first half play, with Yarmouth’s next chance coming from Jones pressing high again the chance fell to Burnett, but he just failed to connect, writes COLIN JONES.

After 22 minutes the deadlock was broken, Jarvis left no chance after a Newmarket man was left to head in from a corner, a position where most of Yarmouth’s recent goals against have come from.

Yarmouth’s next noteworthy attack was actually started from defence, Barnden executed a strong tackle in his own area starting a counter attack in which Mitch Forbes couldn’t gather in his stride. Barnden again was in the heat of the action, heading clear after Newmarket found space again in the Yarmouth area from another corner.

Yarmouth’s efforts were rewarded on 51 minutes, defender Shaun Bartley hooked the ball towards goal after gathering the ball from a corner and the ball sailed beyond the keepers reach and dipped into the top corner, making the scores justifiably level at 1-1.

Yarmouth continued to press and the promotion-chasers were under the cosh with Yarmouth pressing to take the lead. The team’s rhythm was disrupted when Bartley had to be substituted due to injury, where Crux came on and Burnett reshuffled to right full back.

Then came the game’s deciding period. After 67 minutes a mix-up between Rob Andersen and Johnny Jarvis saw a cross in from the left be deflected into the net by Andersen for an own goal. The team barely had time to regroup before Yarmouth found themselves 3-1 on 68 minutes. A through ball left a Newmarket player through one on one with Jarvis, and the player coolly slotted the ball in to make it 3-1, which at the time was in no way a reflection of the match.

Yarmouth were sucker-punched, and Newmarket could have scored again just three minutes later, substitute Stephen Bugg was unmarked at the far post from close range, Jarvis made a point blank save, the ball hit the post and Jarvis just managed to smother the ball. After 72 minutes lax defending led to Newmarket’s fourth goal.

Derbyshire made two changes as he tried to inject some composure in the team, Dan Baldock and Marian Jobbagy came on for Burnett and McAra respectively. The Yarmouth defence suddenly went AWOL again, Jarvis again left no chance with another one on one.

Yarmouth: Johnny Jarvis, Shaun Bartley (Leighton Crux 63), Robin Andersen, Callum Jones, Joe Bryanton, Jordan Forbes, Connor Deeks, George Barnden, Mitch Forbes, Charlie McAra (Marian Jobbagy 77), Rorie Burnett (Dan Baldock 72). Goal: S Bartley.
