IN a busy week, Great Yarmouth Cycling Club was strongly representated at local events.

The highlight of the action was the Eastern District Cycling Association (EDCA) 50-mile time trial.

GYCC fielded two of their hardy time trialists, who both rode strongly to record great results in a field of 70-plus riders.

Seasoned road racer Ian Sandall recorded the fastest club time with a fantastic 2-11:14. Slightly behind Ian was Paul Anderson who completed the course in 2-24:01.

Earlier that week four Great Yarmouth riders competed in the VC Baracchi two-up 25-mile time trial held around the club’s frequently-used Somerleyton course.

Unlike a traditional time trial, where an individual cyclist pits himself against the clock, a two-up allows two riders to pair up and work together – often resulting in much faster times.

The winners of the trophy were VC Baracchi riders Liam Gentry, currently in fine form, recording numerous victories already this season, and Mark Drake – who was drafted in at the last minute.

Adam Houlgate and Jules Claxton worked together efficiently and recorded the fastest GYCC time that evening with an impressive 1-03:00 – a very fast time on a “sporting” course known for sharp corners and undulating relief.

Hot on their heels were Ian Sandall and Larry Colby, who rode around a minute slower.

The evening after, Adam Houlgate celebrated again by recording a new personal best on the Somerleyton 10-mile time trial circuit. Finishing with a time of 25:25, Adam was the fastest GYCC rider that evening and the second fastest overall.

With times coming down and personal bests being recorded on a weekly basis, it is clear to see Great Yarmouth Cycling Club is transforming into a successful racing team as well as maintaining and developing its core aim as a community sports club which encourages young and novice riders to enjoys the benefits cycling can offer.

GYCC is still continuing its club nights on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm at Cliff Park Junior School.

Novice riders are offered a choice of a short led ride, by experienced club riders, taking in the local countryside at a gentle pace whilst juniors are catered for with bike handling lessons and training sessions in the playground.
