A prolific stretch of the tidal River Yare, commonly known as the Yarmouth Bank, from Rockland Dyke to Langley once again produced stunning bream catches in the latest run of the Nisa Feeder Saturday series.

Winner was Mick Hanks (Yarmouth) with 39lb 8oz from peg 144 at Langley, Andy Moss (Daiwa AD) was runner- up with 33lb 10oz and Brian Weavers (Yarmouth Sportsmans) was third with 31lb 12oz.

All three caught mostly skimmer bream and odd specimens to 5lb all falling to the standard feeder rig, baited with worm and maggot.

Club anglers enjoyed excellent sport on the match lakes, where results were: Stalham (Bartles Lodge): D Agass 79lb 8oz; B Burlton 46lb 14oz; T Wilkinson 37lb 12oz. Dukes (Holly Farm, South Walsham): C Urry 73lb 12oz; I Spalding 58lb 3oz; N Goose 41lb 2oz. Sportsmans (Melton Ponds): S Huggins 30lb 11oz; R Silverwood 28lb 3oz; A Varley 19lb 9oz.

On the big-fish waters, Darren Stamp, of Caister, engraved his name on last week's catch report at the Taswood Fishery with a splendid 27lb 4oz common carp, while at the Lyng Kingfisher Lake, another Caister carp enthusiast, Chris Burden, netted a common of 24lb and a mirror of 20lb.

The tidal River Bure at St Benet's Abbey and The Thurne at Cold Harbour were both in fine form for match and pleasure anglers alike, who recorded catches around the 30lb mark.

The River Thurne at Martham Cess produced exceptional sport after dark with nets of bream aggregates up to 80lb containing individual specimens over 7lb.

On the main Broads, Hickling and Horsey Mere have produced splendid all-round sport with bream, roach and some quite magnificent perch, most of which were caught on baits intended for something else.

All the augurs well for the final round of the Broads Summer League scheduled for the rivers Bure and Thurne on Sunday (6.30am start).

But both Sportsmans and Stalham Veterans require an upturn in form to stand any chance of making the top three in their respective divisions.

The tide will be running up for most of the match. The water is expected to carry an ideal tinge of colour for bream fishing and the target is 40lb of bream in the promising sections with 10lb of small roach able to win vital points in the poorer areas.

On the seafront, activity is beginning to rise with the early arrival of the whiting, albeit some of the younger generations of this ubiquitous species - whose better quality fish should be taken straight out of the sea and into the pan for the best culinary results of the soft-fleshed roundfish.

However, bass remain the target of the seafood gourmet and the best catches, as usual, are falling to boat anglers fishing sand eels well offshore.
