Great Yarmouth & District Football League

In the most thrilling title race for years, the league championship went down to the wire, with MK United and Catfield battling for the title in a winner-takes-all match at Mill Lane.

In front of a crowd of around 300, challengers MK United had the best of the opening exchanges. Norman, Pasco and the Hogg brothers caused Catfield problems with their pace, with MK getting in down both flanks.

Molloy saved well from Norman, while Arran Hogg fired over on the turn from 15 yards. Despite playing the better football in the first half, MK did not have a goal to show for their hard work and it was level pegging at the break.

Catfield, however, are not champions for nothing, and 10 minutes into the second half dangerous front man Chad Pillar put the visitors ahead as he struck from 12 yards.

Both sides continued to press and with Pollard moving to left-back to counter the threat of Norman, MK where finding it more difficult to get in round the Catfield back line. On the occasions they did, they found goalkeeper Molloy in commanding form.

Fifteen minutes from time Catfield where awarded a penalty when Pillar was fouled. The striker made no mistake to give Catfield a 2-0 lead.

With minutes remaining, Pasco pulled one back for the home side with a far-post header, but it was not to be, as the whistle blew and Catfield where crowned Great Yarmouth and District Football League champions.

Both teams can be congratulated on a thrilling season and we can look forward to next season, where there may just be a couple of extra challengers for the title.

It was the Cats' fifth title in as many years, and they have been unbeaten in the league all that time. They have also won two cups this season.

Caister signed off a memorable season by winning 4-2 on Monday against Feathers, while on Wednesday they finished off with a 5-2 win at Prostar Windows.
