Great Yarmouth and District Football League

THE season is reaching a fascinating climax with six weeks left of league action.

The weekend saw the first HA Holmes League Cup semi-final as Albion, the Wiltshire Cup finalists, faced Lacon Arms, who can still realistically win the league title.

Both teams for various reasons fielded under-strength sides. Lacon Arms adjusted better as they had the better exchanges in the first half.

But Albion are all heart and they battled away and took the lead when the dangerous Peter Oldham headed home from a corner.

Lacons made a change at half-time with Goodrum taking over with the gloves from an injured John Hughes.

Early second half and a superb deep cross found Dean Harper at the back post who poked home.

They continued to press and scored what turned out to be the winner when McColgan unleashed a shot that left Turner no chance.

Albion dominated the last 20 minutes but could not salvage the game. They must pick themselves up as they face Catfield on Monday in the Wiltshire Cup final.

Lacon Arms, meanwhile, booked their place on Wednesday, April 21, at the Wellesley against either Catfield or MK United, who play on April 10.

In the remaining first round Percy Nockolds Trophy games Caister United, who already have a Burgess Cup final, defeated MK United Reserves 2-0 to set up a tie with

Great Yarmouth International on Wednesday with a 6pm kick-off.

International booked their place by beating spirited South Yarmouth 4-1 on the Beaco.

Hemsby Reserves are the second team into the semi finals after they defeated GY Peelers 4-1. The draw for the semi-finals takes place Thursday after the last two quarter-finals Wednesday night.

The Division One race is not done and dusted yet as the champions Catfield defeated a improved Tramways 5-0. Catfield have four games in hand, and four wins will open up the title race again.

Shrublands and Reedham battled to a 2-2 draw on the common in an exciting game.

Bohemians and Norfolk and Chance both won Saturday in Division Two to leave the title race wide open.

Bohemians' 3-1 win over Carpathians and Norfolk and Chances 3-0 win over Feathers means that three points separates the two sides with three games left including a clash with each other.

Gorleston Wanderers' improvement continued as they drew 0-0 with Prostar Windows on Mill Lane.

Monday sees the Wiltshire Cup final as Albion and Catfield do battle at the Wellesley in the 10.30am kick-off. Gates will be open from 9.45am.

This could be one of the closest final in years as both teams have recorded narrow one-goal victories over each other this season.

Wednesday sees three games on Gorleston Rec as Catfield play GY Peelers and there are two Percy Nockolds quarter-finals.
