Sheringham 1, Acle United 4

ACLE reached the May final of the Anglian Combination’s Mummery Cup with Saturday’s semi-final win over the Shannocks.

At a cold Weybourne Road Sheringham were in determined mood, especially when they got an unexpected lead courtesy of central defender Tom Graver.

He out-jumped everyone to send a header beyond the reach of Scott Foreman in Acle’s goal.

Sheringham so nearly upset the form book when, 10 minutes later, a nice move finished with an effort from Abbs.

It deceived all the visiting defenders except the dominant Daniel Foreman, who rescued Acle with a last-ditch header from under the bar when no other defender was near.

Acle then slipped into gear and played some neat one-touch football that proved difficult for Sheringham to handle.

Acle scored at regular intervals and slipped nicely into the final with a confident display of football of the style their supporters have become accustomed to.

After 31 minutes Harry Maddison continued his rich vein of scoring as he was in the right spot to put the ball in the net for the equaliser that gave Sheringham keeper Andy Jackson no chance.

With five further minutes on the clock, with Goreham, Thompson and Butler pulling the strings, Robbie Oldham won the ball in the hosts’ penalty area and put Acle ahead with an opportunist’s hook that deceived Sheringham’s keeper.

With half-time approaching, it was Goreham’s turn to get on the score-sheet. Manning, Nobbs, Daniel Foreman and Hodds were dominating proceedings at the back and giving the rampant front line the opportunity to play the ball around and pick out players at will.

It was from one of these chances that Acle captain Luke Goreham got the ball and picked his spot with a clinical 20-yard shot.

Ricci Butler, who had been a constant menace to the Sheringham players – continually leaving the home defenders for dead with his skill and ability – finally got the reward his work deserved.

After 82 minutes he again proved too much of a handful for three men as he put the ball in the net for Acle’s fourth.

Tomorrow, Acle – fifth in the Premier Division – visit fourth-placed Mattishall.
