Acle Indoor Bowls Club

In the Vivienne Trophy Acle Ladies were up against Beccles and needed to put in a good performance to give them a close game. Beccles won 84-73.

Pam Symes, Edna Land, Dawn Horne and Anne Drury at Beccles were pleased to be level at 10 each on nine ends and were playing well, but by 15 ends they were 11–17 down. Grit and determination was needed and they scored three fours as they went on to win 27–17.

Pam Hollis, Gladys Gibbs, Amy Barker and Peggy Budd were 6–7 at 10 ends but went 9–15 down at 16. This rink had been in top form and they finished in buoyant mood to win 18–16. Pat Pegram’s were 4–16 down at 10 ends, then kept it tight but lost 15–25. Margaret Shields rink were 7–12 at 10 and 8–20 at 15 and lost 13–26.

The Men’s C team braved the snow and ice and travelled to Dereham and realised it was going to be a difficult green to master and points would be at a premium.

Keith Owen, Jim Cole, Ray Smith and Mick Askham adjusted to the pushy green and were 6–5 up at 10 ends. Four shots on the 12th were eliminated when they dropped a five on the 13th, and it was 12-12 at 15, then 17–12 with three to play and they won 19–14.

Roy Roofe, Scott Watson, Wille Jeffries and Brian Grint dropped a four on the first end but by 10 were 12–8 up, were unfortunate to drop a six on the 15th but bounced back with a four on the 17th, and winning 13 of the ends finished 22–19.

Pat Beales’ rink were 2–11 down at five ends and 6–13 at 10, came back well to take a 15–14 lead at 15 ends but dropped a four on the 18th and in an unlucky final bowl lost 19–20.

Mathew Carter’s rink scored a five on the second end and were 12–8 up at five ends only to drop a six on the sixth. They held shots on most ends, the opposing skip continued to save the day, but a five on the 18th put the score at 18–22. The final two ends went against them as they lost 21–24.

Result: Dereham 77 (2), Acle 81 (5) to stay top of the table.

Beccles were again the opposition, in the Egham Trophy, and revenge was needed.

At Beccles, Mark Elliott, Shirley Lettice, Barbara Meeks and Lewis Moore settled well and at 10 ends were 13–8 up, 19–10 at 15, and two fours in the last three ends gave them a deserved 27–14 win.

At Acle, John Colcombe, Jenny Stone, Marion Himpleman and George Tubby were 9–6 at 10 ends, 12–8 at 15 and with all players playing well they went on to win 18–10.

Also at home Robin Norman’s rink scored five on the sixth to go into a 6–4 lead, but by 14 ends were 9–16 down. Winning the final four ends they came back to 17–20.

Meanwhile at Beccles, Jamie Howlett’s rink were 12–9 up at 10 but after dropping two fours went 15–19 down at 15, kept the opposition poor over the remaining ends to lose 17–26.

After being 11 shots up at 10 ends, by 18 ends only three shots separated the teams. But a final flourish by Acle gave them a 79–72 win.
