GREAT Yarmouth match angler Dave Docwra won the latest open event at the Burgh Castle fishery.

The former Yarmouth national team man reeled in a mixed bag of 22lb 10oz.

Docwra's approach nowadays to his favourite sport is one of admirable stoicism, even though his ability to carry the tackle along the banks is hampered by his incapacity.

“It's not the winnings in cash terms, I just happen to love match fishing and try to perfect techniques to suit all waters,” he explained.

“I'm just as happy to fish with the local club lads as I was back in the 1970s when I was a member of the Yarmouth Dream Team that won every river championship in eastern England against a field of hundreds.

“Alas, those days of big river championships are long gone and will never return because anglers want to fish in small matches on the lakes nowadays.”

Elsewhere, the Martham club angler Stephen Rouse chalked up a 37lb 3oz winner at the Hill Farm, Banham, open event and also made second spot at Mill Farm, Great Ellingham with 85lb 12oz.
