Another parkrun record

ANOTHER record turnout of 136 runners gathered in wall-to-wall sunshine for the second anniversary run.

This free event truly attracts runners and walkers of all abilities and ages and, after two years, has accomplished its main aim of establishing a free, weekly exercise venue for anyone interested in improving their health and fitness.

Although originally a member of GYRR, the winner this week, for the first time, came all the way from Dumfries in Scotland. Ian Liffen strode round in 17:20 with Kevin Sharman of Lowestoft RR second in 17:58 and Mark Thompson of GYRR third in 18:11.

In the ladies’ race, Colleen Anderson won in 21:22 with Phoebe Baker of GYDAC second in 22:20 and Liz Pudney third in 23:18.

All these times are excellent but everyone who ran can be pleased with their performances. In this event there are only winners – it is being there that counts and everyone is encouraged to do their best.

This is now the start of Gorleston parkrun’s third year. Winners of the 2010/2011 league tables are Nick Overy and Pauline Richardson. For Nick, this was his 100th run out of 105, but he was just pipped to the 100-mark last week by Howard Wilcox.

Congratulations to all who make parkrun so enjoyable for so many – runners, volunteers and spectators.

Already 951 people have registered on the website to run at Gorleston, so the next landmark will be in 49 registrations time. Who will be the 1,000th runner?
