Lovewell Blake Malta Cup League

Holders Acle A now look to be heading for the finals with the runners-up spot chase looking like going to the wire.

Bradwell had the result of the week with an 82-53 shots win over Martham A for a 6-1 points.

In Division Two the win by Acle B over Great Yarmouth B was much closer than it looks with three rinks all separated by one shot.

Ormesby green was hit by a thunderstorm, resulting in yet another game to be re arranged by August 13.

Can home team captains please phone in results after each game. The finals are to be held on the Britannia Greens on Sunday, August 16 starting at 10am. Dress is whites with club tie, and raffle prizes would be gratefully accepted.

Bradwell Bowls Club

BRADWELL enjoyed considerable success. Progress in the Lovewell Blake Malta Cup was boosted with an excellent home victory over Martham, currently second in the league. Ted Connellan, Ken Hall and Ron Beardall 24-8; Ken Saward, Jim Malcolm and Eddie Macdonald 24-14; Tom Williams, John Sargent and Mick Marshall 20-15; Keith Cooke, Malcolm French and Terry Payne 14-16.

In the Hansells EBA League, Ken Saward, Ollie Scarfe, Terry Payne and Eddie Macdonaldwon 31-11, away against Fleggburgh B.

Keith Cooke, Ted Connellan, Mick Marshall and Ken Hall 21-12. Peter King, Brian Pilgrim, John Sargent and Ron Beardall 18-28.

An overall result of 44 shots to 39 went to Browston when Bradwell played away in the Norfolk County Federation League.

Malcolm French, Terry Payne and Eddie Macdonald earned Bradwell's one success, 20-8.

From three matches in the Lothingland League, Bradwell gained one excellent win over Gorleston Conservatives A. Louise Pilgrim, Joy Williams and Colin Deverill 26-13; Tom Hall, Frank Hatton and Bryan Goffin 25-22; Jean Fagan, Thelma Bradnum and John Ward 24-14; Ray Norton, Tom Williams and Charles Hutcheson 21-22.

The home match against Oulton Broad was a points loss for Bradwell but there were notable performances. Ivan Rudge, Joy Williams and Shirley Lloyd 20-15.

Ray Norton, Tom Williams and Colin Deverill were 14-19 on the 20th. Their three shots on the last showed courage but were not quite enough. Other scores were 15-26 and 12-25.

At Northgate, Bradwell had a mildly unhappy evening but Keith Baker, Thelma Bradnum and Charles Hutcheson built on their opening lead to 17-12. There were also two close results, 17-19 for Anne Baker, Ray Norton and Bryan Goffin; Rita Ellis, Sheila Bean and Derek Patterson 15-18.

In the Lowestoft and District League Bradwell played one match at home against Blundeston.

Although no Bradwell block recorded a victory Jean Fagan, Bryan Vincent and Dahlia Macdonald had 23-22 on the twentieth, only to admit five on the last for 23-27. George Coxsey, Paul Vincent and John Ward at 17-16 on the 20th they caught four against for 17-20.

In the Sunshine League home match against Waveney, Bradwell had another welcome win. Rita Ellis, Sheila Bean and Andy Cameron 26-15; Terry Gallant, George Coxsey and Hugh Clifton 21-15; Tom Williams, Wally Bean and Joan Bayfield 16-19.

Martham Tournament

ENTRIES are invited for The Watson Shield Open Pairs Tournament, which will be held at Martham Bowls Club on Sunday, August 2 at 1.30 for 2pm.

This is a single-sex or mixed, four-wood, pairs event sponsored by Festival Enterprises Ltd who have donated �100 prize money to be shared by the three top-scoring pairs. The winning pair will also receive the Watson Shield. Entry fee �5 per pair. Bar and refreshments available.

Martham Bowls Club

Supporters had a good day on Sunday with their county finalists winning both of their matches in the NCBA finals at Holt.

Paul Randell and John Dyball played the Men's Veteran Pairs in the morning and were always well ahead.

In the afternoon John bowled again, this time with Pam Symes in the Senior Mixed Pairs.

This was a much tighter game, but Pam and John kept their nerve and bowled some excellent woods on the last few ends to take the title.

The three of them will now compete in the National Championships at Skegness in August.

In the Men's EBA League Martham played Acle B at home and all rinks were decided on the last end. One lost a measure to lose 16-17, another dropped two shots to lose 19-20.

Les Smith was three down trailed the jack to get three shots and win 21-15. Overall score 56-52 (3-2).

In the Malta Cup League the A team travelled to Bradwell. At 10 ends there were two shots in the game. The Bradwell boys then out-bowled Martham, winning on all three rinks to win by 29 shots (6-1).

In the Yarmouth League, Martham A results were Runham 66 (1), Martham A 92 (6); Martham A 112 (7), Gorleston 44 (0). In the Donny Pearce Cup Martham A 91, Rollesby 57.

On Friday Martham Ladies entertained Acle, wining on two rinks to gain five points 57-49. Top block were Madeleine Balls, Sue Moore and Pa Dickinson.

Browston Bowls

A WELCOME seven points for the EDF team playing at home against Bradwell. J Watson, B Good and Elsie Hall after losing a four on the first end, ended up winning 18-9; P Chaplin, N Miller and A Harrison 18-10. J Malcolm 8-20.

In the Malta Cup League the B team playing at Freethorpe took 4� points in their close 66-65 win.

Going in to the final ends with score at 64-64, P Chaplin, P Smith and S Parker, 16-17 down scored one shot to level the game.

N Miller, P Ridler and J Kelsall 21-11, and M Harvey 12-18 with a no score on their last end, and D Farman dropped one shot 16-19 on his last end.

In their County League game at home against Yarmouth B, M Harvey N Miller, B Myhill and B Good had a shaky start 0-8 down after four ends but steadily picked up shots to win 22-18 and gained the only point in the match.

The A team took six points from their 82-52 win over Yarmouth C in the Malta Cup League, top rink D Pratt, R Turner and L Peake, 18-4 up at halfway and won 33-7.

P Tyrrell, V Bloom, and A Harrison one shot down at the ninth but picked up a four and a five over the remaining ends to win 23-10.

P Morris, C Butcher and J Ellis in a much close game won 16-13. D Noble 10-22.

Rollesby Bowls Club

ROLLESBY'S improved form was brief and normal service resumed with some difficult games in the Yarmouth League this past week.

Away to Runham they lost overall 58-82, points 1-6. J Mason, T Wright, T Avery 18-16.

In the D Pearce semi-final against Martham A, Rollesby were unable to repeat the performance of two weeks ago and came a poor second 57-91.

Still in the Yarmouth League, and again, against one of the teams pushing for honours, Rollesby hoped to take points at home to Woodbastwick.

In a keenly contested match, the home side lost narrowly on two rinks 17-19 and 19-20 and the 23-12 win by E Taylor, P Taylor, T Avery was not enough to counter the heavy defeat on the remaining rink. Final score 66-90, points 1-6.

Travelling to Stalham in the away leg of the semi-final of the Broadland Rotary Shield, Rollesby should be very pleased with the performance, winning on all four rinks and starting the second leg next week with a 23 shot advantage. Final score 77-54. S Allen, M Coots, B Catchpole 17-13, J Avery, E Taylor, T Avery 15-14, F Walker, T Wright, G Curtis 25-15, S Daniels, J Mason, J Catchpole 20-12.

Rollesby's week ended with a County League match at Cantley where they were unlucky to come away with only two points. Narrow defeats of 17-20 and 14-19 could not quite be reversed by the 15-9 win of J Austin, A Christie, T Wilkin. Overall score 46-48, points 2-7.

Finals

Holt Bowls Club hosted the NCBA County Championship finals on Sunday.
