Charismatic and controversial former soccer boss Ron Atkinson will be taking a starring turn in Caister Football Club's centenary celebrations.

Big Ron has been announced as the speaker at the club's centenary dinner at the Ocean Room in Gorleston in September.

A larger than life character, Atkinson is also one of Britain's best known football pundits, who became famous for his quirky comments from the commentary box.

He spent nearly four decades in the dug-out managing a succession of top flight clubs, leading Manchester United to two FA Cup victories during a six-year spell at Old Trafford in the 1980s.

Caister FC reserve team manager Adam Mason said: “We are very excited by the prospect of Ron Atkinson speaking at the centenary dinner.

“We wanted to get a big name to make the night as special as possible.

“One hundred years as a junior club is fantastic, and it is important that we didn't let the year pass without such a big event. I think he fits the bill perfectly.

“There has already had a great response, which is fantastic considering advertising and posters have not gone to print yet.

“We are expecting it to be a sell out by the time September comes around.”

The centenary dinner, on September 25, is one of a series of events planned throughout the year marking the Dolphin Autos Anglian Combination club's 100th anniversary, including a match against Norwich City legends and family fun day.
