Felixstowe 3, Broadland-Great Yarmouth 29

BROADLAND battled against the terrible weather to record a well-earned away victory.

Despite starting brightly B-GY soon found themselves three points down to an early Felixstowe penalty.

They responded strongly with good probing runs from Andrew Riches and Kieran Wilkes setting up quick ball which allowed fly-half Simon Ruddick to dummy his man and score by the posts (unconverted.)

Felixstowe were struggling to make an impression on the Broadland defence.

Solid forwards work from Adam Towfighi and Asa Morrison created a solid platform and centre Peter Gilbey crashed through several tackles to score (converted Tom Weston).

Felixstowe soon found themselves facing an even tougher challenge when flanker Ed Dixon broke through to score (converted T Weston).

With the second half under way Broadland found themselves on the back foot, but strong running from Stacey Ledgerwood and Tom Weston allowed them to break out from their half and relieve the pressure.

The final ball was lacking at times, however, and despite winger Ben Collings putting in a big run they were unable to capitalise.

Felixstowe were struggling to create any pressure with Sam Noon putting in solid hits on the opposition centres, leading to turnovers.

Eventually, Broadland’s relentless attacking paid off with Matt Beckett crashing the ball up near the line. And when Felixstowe gave away the penalty hooker Rye Bilyard took it quickly and barged his way over the line (converted T Weston).

The pressure continued with scrum-half Phil Buckley breaking through the Felixstowe defence.

He was stopped just short, and despite getting the ball out to winger Joe Payne, Broadland failed to capitalise and possession was eventually squandered.

Broadland-Great Yarmouth Tigers 3, Wymondham III 10

Broadland-Great Yarmouth entertained a Wymondham team that had inflicted a heavy defeat on them only two weeks previously.

From the kick-off the match was again a hotly-contested affair in the cold wind and heavy rain, with the tackles going in hard and fast from both teams

In the conditions, it was hard for either side to build any consistency, with loose passing and kicking out of hand ruling the day.

As Tigers were again losing out to the Wymondham pack in the tight, they tried to play a more expansive game, but the visitors were very adept at slowing the ball at the crucial time.

This prevented the home side from gaining any momentum and create any chance for their players wide out.

Wymondham worked their way into the Tigers’ 22-metre area and from the resulting line-out set up a
well-planned maul to drive over the line to score.

The Tigers responded with some fine interplay between forwards and backs which resulted in a penalty about 30 metres out. J Pollard slotted the ball between the posts with a fine shot into a strong headwind.

Half-time saw changes and the second half again saw the ball going between the two sides as they both tried to gain superiority.

Following a keenly-fought ruck on halfway, scrum-half Clarke saw that the Wymondham left winger was tied in.

He put a box-kick over for flying wing Howlett to chase, but a combination of the wet conditions and a cruel bounce meant that the ball evaded his grasp with the line begging.

From the resulting scrum the Wymondham pack ground their way upfield towards the Tigers’ try line and at the crucial time release one of the forwards made the final drive to the line.

The Tigers again responded with gusto but even now with the fresh legs of Hawkes and Monson for Tucker and Dwyer were unable to break down Wymondham’s resilient defence.

For all their hard word the Tigers were left with no points, but this was a vast improvement over their recent performances where every mistake cost them dear.

Replacements: L Monson (60), G Jarvis (40), J Prescott (40), P Able (40), P Calnon (not used), G Hawkes (50). Points: J Pollard (pen).

Spar Hemsby man of the match: T Simmons.
