Broadland - GY III 80 Lowestoft & Y III 10

Regulators enjoyed a dazzling start to the season with a 14-try performance.

L&Y took the lead, but Broadland soon countered. A great run from prop Liam Lovick, followed by a delicate pass saw flanker Joe Bensley drive over to score. Minutes later Bensley drove though tackles to score his second. L&Y kept the game close with a second try before Broadland’s next try, probably one of the best seen at the club this season. L&Y were attacking just outside Broadland’s 22 metre line. A strong counter-ruck from John Graham and Mark Millar saw the ball roll loose. Tight head prop Farai Chininga playing in his first game for Broadland, scooped the ball and headed down the side line. Chininga stayed ahead of the chase to go almost 70 yards to score. The first half was concluded as centre Sam Noon gracefully slipped a tackle to break free and score. Broadland were forced to defend hard in the final few minutes with wings Lee and James Chaplin Madden as well as full back White all having to make try scoring tackles. The hosts led 22-10 at the half.

Broadland made a few changes with James Close, David Long and A Clarke coming on at the half and really picked up the tempo. Bensley broke for his third try and then spectacularly for his fourth score within two minutes. Number 8 Chris Calnon showed his pace as he picked up a loose ball and went 60 metres through the middle to score under the posts. Broadland half-backs Justin Millar and Russ Clarke were working overtime as there was opportunity after opportunity for the home side.

Mark Lacock set of on a barnstorming run, before setting Sam Noon free to score his second. David Long and Ash Clarke had good runs as again Broadland moved closer. Hooker George Jarvis had a good run through the middle, followed by Pete Calnon, finally Sam Noon saw a gap and surged through for his third score.

Broadland changes saw Jay Webster, Rye Bilyard, Terry Bristo and George Holmes taking the field. Wing Webster, 17, made an immediate impact on his senior debut as he took the ball wide to score in the corner. Webster score again minutes later. Broadland super veteran Kev Colling joined the pack, returning to the rugby pitch for the first time in two years.

A quick penalty tap saw Rye Bilyard drive in from close range in his return match following six weeks injured. Broadland broke from deep as Noon cut across the pitch. A quick ruck saw a break from Bilyard, who put James Close away for a score. Bristo and Long set a neat ruck as Kev Collings picked up at the base, cut inside and scored from eight yards on the final play of the game.
