Bloaters bow out of Senior Cup as Daniels opens his Diss account
Gt Yarmouth Town 1 Diss Town 3
A George Barnden strike couldn’t prevent Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Diss from knocking Division One outfit Yarmouth out of the Norfolk Senior Cup as new Tangerines boss Richard Daniels gained the upper hand over good friend and former Gorleston managerial partner Mike Derbyshire.
The Tangerines, without a win in the first three games of Daniels’ reign, opened the scoring early in the second half through Matt Dixon before Barnden’s equaliser just after the hour mark.
Ashley Skeggs gave the visitors the lead but with Yarmouth threatening to put the game into extra time, Valter Rocha completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, writes REBECCA ABBOTT.
The gap in status seemed not to worry the Bloaters as after five minutes Josh Thomas, starting in place of Charlie McAra, was inches away from converting Marian Jobbagy’s left sided cross into what would have been an empty net.
Soon after, Joel Watts was denied by Diss ‘keeper Matthew Webster before injury forced Thomas to be replaced by Leighton Crux, the winger making his first appearance of the season.
On the half hour, Cudden dived low to his left to turn behind Ashley Skeggs’ drive from outside the box before parrying Stuart Garner’s close-range volley from the resulting corner.

Yarmouth could have taken the lead moments after the break. Callum Jones’s 30-yard drive was parried straight into the path of Mitch Forbes but the striker fired the rebound over from six yards. Instead Diss took the lead through Matthew Dixon. The striker latched on to Valter Rocha’s deflected through ball and found a yard of space to slot home.
Just before the hour mark Yarmouth were level. A free kick near the half-way line –- won after Joel Watts was dumped to the ground by an Aarron Taylor tackle – was whipped to the far post by Robin Andersen, where George Barnden escaped the attentions of the Diss defence to tap home his fourth goal of the season.
Ashley Skeggs put Diss back in front 12 minutes from time, turning home Valter Rocha’s cutback.
It prompted Derbyshire to send Danny Scriven and Tom Markham on for Marian Jobbagy and Johnny Jarvis in search of the equaliser. It almost came four minutes into stoppage time. Scriven was fouled on the halfway line. Ben Cudden was urged forward to join in with the attack. Robin Andersen crossed in the free kick. It hung in the air before being caught by Matthew Webster. The Diss ‘keeper cleared the ball to Valter Rocha, the lone attacker shrugged off the attention of the last defender before slotting home.
