GREAT Yarmouth Town missed out on a home victory on Saturday thanks to a very late goal by Halstead for 2-2, and then were swamped 5-1 thanks to a deluge of second-half goals from Stowmarket on Tuesday.

Stowmarket have featured in some high-scoring games this season, including a 9-2 home defeat by Diss and a 5-1 defeat at home to Gorleston followed by a 7-1 win at home to Fakenham then a 3-3 draw at Emerald Park, and they are now the highest scorers in the lower part of the table, writes Gerry Brown.

Although for Town supporters generally, Tuesday night turned out to be a

miserable one, for one supporter though it was not so bad.

Brian Gibbs, one-time secretary of the Bloaters' Supporters Club, is the council attendant at most games, preparing the ground and clearing up afterwards, and was making his final appearance before semi-retirement after he reckoned about 20 years in the job.

After releasing the nets and collecting up the flag poles on Tuesday, he was delighted that in future he would not be required to get soaking wet and freezing cold after Yarmouth's games!

On Saturday, he will be back - but to man one of the ground entrances for the club.

Tomorrow, the Bloaters once again for the last game of a season, entertain one of the high-flyers - Saffron Walden - who will be going all out for a good win in the hope that other teams slip up to hand them promotion.

Hadleigh, in third place, are best off with 63 points and a goal difference of 30, but have to play Diss who are sixth with 60 points and a goal difference of 38.

In between are Whitton in fourth place (goal difference 47), and Saffron Walden in fifth but with the smallest goal difference of 14.

Whitton look to have the easiest task, playing Godmanchester at home, but need Hadleigh to get no more than one point in which case Whitton will take the last promotion place with their superior goal difference.

If Hadleigh and Whitton both lose and Saffron Walden win, Yarmouth's visitors will regain Premier Division status. The match at the Wellesley kicks off at 3pm.
