OVER six years have passed since it last happened, but a senior Great Yarmouth Town Yarmouth team once again tops its division.

The Bloaters' Reserves went top of Anglian Combination Division Two last Saturday following their 3-2 win over Oulton Broad & Notleys, their fifth win on the trot.

It was in September 2002 that the reserves last achieved any leadership position, when they were in Division One.

Although their chief rivals were involved in cup competition, and have games in hand, it is a real cause of celebration for the second string, who have had some raw deals in recent seasons what with changes of management and, at times, having

to scratch around for players, writes Gerry Brown.

Their success this season typifies and is reward for the new co-ordinated approach from all at Wellesley Road.

Broad, promoted from Division Three last season and who had already beaten the reserves in an early league fixture, made it difficult for the seconds.

They took the lead in only the fourth minute, then equalised in the second half after Yarmouth had gone into the break 2-1 up, before Yarmouth scored a deserved winner.

The reserves should have had more goals from their many chances but had to be content with those scored by brothers Jose and Fernando Vide and Mark Thompson - a superb 35-yard free-kick.

Otherwise, it has been a quiet fortnight for football at the club, with the first team's game at Saffron Walden and the youth side's game at Harford Tornadoes both falling foul of the wet weather and water-logged pitches.

The U18s' postponement followed their abandoned game with Cromer Town.

Tomorrow (Saturday), weather permitting, the Ridgeons Division One team host Godmanchester Rovers, the surprise package of the division.

Although they have lost their last two games, at home to Gorleston and away at Halstead, the Huntingdon-based side were unbeaten in their previous seven, of which they won six during which time they briefly led the section.

Currently Rovers are in fourth place, one higher than Yarmouth who have games in hand on all the leading teams. The Wellesley match kicks off

at 3pm.

The reserves start a run of three away games at Hellesdon tomorrow (Saturday, 2pm) while the U18s host Dereham Youth on Wednesday (7.45).
