Bloaters eye a double

RESULTS mostly went Great Yarmouth Town's way last weekend, with Newmarket beating Hadleigh and the rest of the contenders either drawing or losing.

After midweek fixtures they are eighth in Ridgeons One, seven points off the last promotion place with two games in hand over third team Halstead.

Tomorrow, the Bloates entertain Debenham LC (Wellesley, 3) looking for a league double after they snatched an unlikely victory at the Leisure Centre in September. Then, Gareth Palmer scored in the first half and then took over in goal early in the second after an injury to Elliot Pride, writes Gerry Brown.

The Suffolk outfit won 6-3 (after extra time) in a League Cup fixture at the Wellesley in October.

The Reserves produced another winning performance against a lowly side, beating Downham Town Reserves 3-0.

The Bloaters now lie third with 39 points from 19 games, but have no game tomorrow. On Tuesday they are at home to Acle Reserves (7.30).

The situation at the top of Division Two of the Anglian Combination sees five or six teams in with a shout of promotion.

Reepham Town (48 points from 20 games) are in pole position but can still be caught, most notably by Norwich St John's (currently fourth with 37 from 16) who have games in hand on all the remaining top four and have only Poringland (second with 41 from 18) to play of this leading group.

Yarmouth Reserves also have to play Poringland once more plus Norwich CEYMS (in fifth place with 34 points from 17 games) twice.

The Youth took a giant stride towards the Eastern Division title with their second win in a week over North Walsham. Just the one goal in it this time, scored after just 30 seconds by Dominic Smith. They had two games this past week, on Monday they beat Bungay Town 5-0 and last night were at Cromer Town. On Wednesday they should face Cromer at the Wellesley (7.45).

Wayne Hunter's U9s reached the final of their league cup with a 7-0 win at Kirkley & Pakefield B. On Sunday they are away to St Benet's.
