Bloaters face FA Cup replay

After a successful FA Cup Saturday, seven local Ridgeons League clubs are through to the preliminary round on August 29, with two facing replays tomorrow and Wednesday nights.

The 16 league teams definitely through - and collecting �750 prize money - include Dereham Town, Diss Town, Gorleston, Mildenhall, Norwich United, Wisbech and Wroxham. Replaying are Great Yarmouth Town and Kirkley & Pakefield.

Out went Diss Town whose gallant fightback just failed.

One of the most emphatic wins was Gorleston's 4-0 win Cornard United which earns a home tie with Northampton Spencer.

The Greens' east coast neighbours, Yarmouth, face a replay trip after their 1-1 draw with Raunds at The Wellesley

Bloaters' manager Paul Tong changed his starting 11 and almost regretted it as his team left it very late to reply to a first-half goal.

Yarmouth fell behind after 34 minutes when a Raunds free-kick came back off the bar and John Tite headed home from the edge of the box.

A strangely hesitant Yarmouth did not look the same outfit that had won and drawn their first two away league games.

Stewart Roach bundled in the equaliser from a Sewell cross in the third of five added minutes. The replay is tomorrow at 7.45. Lowestoft Town away is the prize for the winners.

Dereham set up a Norfolk derby tie with Wroxham by beating visitors Leiston 3-1, without injured skipper Graham Barrett and Nicky Howell.

The Magpies took the lead in the 14th minute. From a Terrington flag kick from the right, Jamies Stannard parried Stuart Williams' header out to Adam Gusterson who netted from close range.

Leiston equalised in the 17th minute through Lee McGlone following a goalmouth scramble.

Dereham regained the lead in the 36th minute when Danny Beaumont curled home a superb free-kick. Danny Beaumont converted an 80th minute penalty.

Wroxham won 2-0 at United Counties League Wellingborough Town.

The Yachtsmen scored in the first half and in the opening 10 minutes of the second through Paul Cook.

Norwich United won their first FA Cup tie for five seasons with a 2-1 victory at reigning UCL champions Stewarts & Lloyds.

The Planters created many chances during the first half and led 2-0 at the break through Andrew Claydon after 20 minutes after Lee Hunter had laid off a Keiran Doherty cross, and Tom Youngs nine minutes before the interval after a loose clearance.

S&L made use of the slope to pile on the pressure in the second half and reduced the arrears in the 65th minute.

A resolute defensive display from Darren Coe and Steve Shipley at the centre of the Planters' defence, combined with a fine save from Nathan Pauling seven minutes from time, secured a home tie with Long Buckby in the next round.

There was a tremendous display by Kirkley & Pakefield who played for 84 minutes with only 10 men at Walsham-le-Willows and drew 1-1 after Ryan de Coteau was sent off conceeding a penalty converted by Andrew Cusack.

K&P took the game by the scruff of the neck but had to wait till the 88th minute to set up a replay on Wednesday night when Chris Henderson guided home a header. The winners are home to Cogenhoe.

Nathan Clarke claimed his first goal for Mildenhall Town as they eased past 10-men Stowmarket at Greens Meadow.

Clarke, a summer signing from Walsham-le-Willows, headed into an empty net just after half-time before further strikes from Steve Harley and Chris Barrett set up a home tie with St Neots.

Wisbech Town won by the only goal of the match at Ely and visit Needham Market in the next round.

Diss Town lost 3-2 at home to Cogenhoe United.

Despite a strong second-half showing the Tangerines were unable to come back from 3-1 down to force a replay against higher league opposition.

Hereward Teamwear United Counties Premier Division Cogenhoe took their chances.

Luke Pritchard sent a high centre to the far post in the 32nd minute for Jamie Russell to head The Cooks into the lead. However, it took The Tangerines less than 90 seconds to equalise.

A through ball was not cut out and George Watts-Sturrock took the ball on his chest before floating a perfect shot over the goalkeeper into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Five minutes before half-time Ben Baines played the ball through for Dan Holman to beat the defence and slide the ball past the advancing Matty Hill to send Cogenhoe 2-1 ahead.

A 52nd minute free-kickset up Alex Lowry to head in to make it 3-1.

Diss scored the goal of the game and one of the goals of the season in the 63rd minute.

A patient build-up saw The Tangerines bring the ball out of defence before Jason Hunt sent a 25-yarder high into the top corner. Fine goalkeeping denied Diss a replay.

In the league, King's Lynn Reserves notched their first Premier Division win of the season, 2-1 at CRC.

In the First Division, Swaffham Town beat visitors Ipswich Wanderers 3-2 with Paul Shafer completing a hat-trick while Thetford Town suffered a 5-3 reverse at Team Bury and Downham drew 2-2 at Long Melford.

Swaffham had most of the first half play but failed to score against Ipswich Wanderers.

Shafer netted after 48 minutes from an Andy Hunter's through ball, Swaffham's opening goal of the season. Two minutes later he doubled his tally with a volley.

A Wanderers penalty hit a post before Shafer competed his hat-trick in the 65th minute with a header before a back pass and a penalty let Wanderers into the game.

Fakenham Town, who have played just one game so far this season, begin a run of three home First Division games on Saturday at home to Saffron Walden.

In a Friday night home friendly they lost 2-1 to Watton.

Gorleston groundsman John Nicholls is a winner at Step 5 and 6 level in the Football Association's Groundsman of the Year awards which aim to recognise the game's unsung heroes at grass roots level.
