GREAT Yarmouth Town's magnificent unbeaten run of 17 games came to an end on Tuesday at Premier Division Wroxham in the Norfolk Senior Cup, one game short of equalling the all-time record, writes Gerry Brown.

“It's been a great achievement though it was a shame not to beat it,” said Bloaters' boss Paul Tong.

“However, I have to pay tribute to the lads - on the run and on Tuesday's excellent performance, despite losing. But now it's back to the league. At this stage of the season we are not far off where we want to be, but there's a long way to go yet.

“We've just got to keep doing what we do best, creating chances, and I'm sure it will come. We can match the best, we've proved that time and again this season against higher teams. The team need not fear anyone - they have to just keep believing and let their football do the talking.”

Tomorrow's home game against Downham (3pm) comes almost a year after the west Norfolk outfit won 2-1 at the Wellesley in a shock result, and Tong is well aware of the dangers. “It's another tough game for us. Being where we are, everyone's going to want to beat us and it's a new experience for the lads. Wayne Anderson, the Downham manager, played for me at Fakenham so I know he will have them well-organised.”

Last Saturday's visit to Saffron Walden was called off because of a gas leak at the Catons Lane ground.

The Reserves visit Needham Market tomorrow (3pm), a team in mid-table just below the Bloaters. On Tuesday, they entertain Dereham Town Reserves (7.45pm).

On Wednesday, the Bloaters Youth U18 side have a home Ridgeons Youth Cup tie with Harford Tornadoes (7.45pm).

An extraordinary general meeting to be held in Legends Bar on Monday, December 14, at 7pm to agree to the proposals for FA Charter Standard status for which the club will be applying. All paid up members are invited.
