Bloaters hunt league title

GREAT Yarmouth Town's challenge for the Ridgeons Division One title goes to the wire tomorrow as the final day dramas are played out.

Yarmouth visit Whitton United whilst rivals FC Clacton entertain Diss Town, a former club of Bloaters' manager Paul Tong, writes Gerry Brown.

Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Clacton saw them remain unbeaten at home in league matches and left Yarmouth two points ahead of Clacton, but only a win looks good enough for the Bloaters as the Clacton goal difference is virtually unassailable.

Tong felt his team were a bit subdued in the first half: “Clacton showed their quality on the ball, which we didn't and for which we got punished. We didn't really work the keeper, who didn't have a save to make, only crosses.

“Second half I asked them to have a go, we changed a couple of things tactically and they were awesome - and all credit to them.”

Despite the celebrations at saving the point, Tong declared: “Nothing's changed, nothing's really happened yet; all it does is keep it all within our own hands on Saturday.

“The three best teams in the league will be promoted, and what will be will be. We'll give it our best shot. So, no celebrations yet, but we deserved that result for the way we played and the chances we created in the second half.”

Tong was fulsome in his praise of captain Stewart Roach, once again a match-saver for Yarmouth: “That man Roach was at it again. He's been written off by some but there he is again! And what a great time for him too, with the birth of a new son, Rio.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Tong is taking nothing for granted: “Whitton will be tough, we struggled to beat them at home and so it's not a forgone conclusion. We've got to apply ourselves. But I'm sure we have the quality and character to do it.”
