GREAT Yarmouth Town got back on the goal trail and to winning ways on Tuesday after two defeats without scoring when they defeated unbeaten First Division leaders Diss Town 3-1.

It was an impressive performance by the Bloaters who could have won by more, and they returned to the top half of the table, writes Gerry Brown.

Tomorrow, the Bloaters face superior opposition for the second week running in a national competition. This time it is the FA Vase which commands their attention with a visit to Ridgeons Premier side Woodbridge Town in the first qualifying round (3).

On Tuesday, there is another midweek attraction at the Wellesley when the Ridgeons One visitors are Team Bury, a new team to the league this season from Bury St Edmunds, ko 7.45pm.

The Reserves, who have won their opening two games, have their first home engagement of the season when Leiston Reserves visit the Wellesley for a Ridgeons Reserve North fixture (3).

Continuing their policy of encouraging younger supporters to attend, and following last week's announcement of the “Kid for a Quid” scheme, the Yarmouth committee have agreed that U16s are to be admitted free to reserve and youth league games when accompanied by an adult. Otherwise, prices for these games are: adults 2, concessions (seniors and unaccompanied U16s) 1.

Club secretary Colin Jones said: “Great Yarmouth have always been recognised as a family club, and by lowering these prices we are showing our commitment to keep that strong family emphasis. With the financial climate as it is currently, we felt that this price reduction was the right thing to do.”

The U18s lost 2-0 at Dereham midweek. Their next game is Tuesday night when they go to Hadleigh United in the FA Youth Cup.

Their first home game is not until September 30 when Wroxham are the visitors.

Great Yarmouth Town 3, Diss Town 1

FOLLOWING the excellent game at Diss last month, this was another thrilling contest which Yarmouth could have won even more convincingly. A total of 14 goal-worthy attempts, including four which hit the post or bar, rained in on the Diss goal

There were all-action performances from a host of players, but maybe left-back Olly Savage just pipped MoM for a combination of his opening goal, some fast raiding down the left wing and some excellent defending.

Meanwhile, Jake Reed gave a tireless display up front and had bad luck on at least two occasions; Dominic Smith was tenacious in midfield and also scored, and Adam Sewell was another full-back with attacking intentions, plus his long throws. Yarmouth this season are becoming an adaptable team that can attack through several channels.

Craig Roberts was another who featured at both ends of the pitch, captain Adey Ager as usual exhorted his troops to greater efforts and Liam Bartley's game is developing new depths with every appearance as he joined the score-sheet for the first time this season.

Diss suffered the loss of Stuart Jenkinson moments before the kick-off as he pulled up in the warm-up, but the game opened electrifyingly with Ager glancing narrowly wide from a corner, and then George Watts-Sturrock blasting wide off a cross from Diss star on the night Sam Bryant who was deadly on their left when given too much room.

Smith and Roberts both had fair attempts before Yarmouth went ahead after a quarter of an hour with a fabulous goal. Olly Savage received the ball just in the Diss half and moved on to shoot from outside the area and beat Matthew Hill all ends up with a shot across to the far post.

Roberts and Michael Hilton produced vital saves before Smith hit the post after beating Hill just inside the area.

Reed put in a great cross which only won a corner before a goalbound Roberts header was put out for yet another corner to Yarmouth.

Stewart Roach straight after the break saw a header come back off the bar with the follow-up shot being kicked off the Diss line.

Bartley put clear daylight between the teams in the 58th minute. A Roach flick-on found Roberts who sent the ball through to Bartley whose shot took a touch off Hill but still found the net.

Marcus Saunders had to go off with a knock to be replaced by Gareth Palmer, who went on to give an exciting cameo appearance but not before the Yarmouth jitters returned after Xavier Huckle took advantage of a muddle in a crowded Bloaters' goalmouth in the 73rd minute.

Roach headed against the Diss bar but the Tangerines enjoyed a purple patch without unduly troubling Hilton. Sewell produced a goal-saving tackle and Watts-Sturrock fired wide as Diss took the direct route. But a third goal for Yarmouth after 86 minutes sealed a fine win.

Palmer led the way to goal, Reed shot but hit a post and Smith followed up to ensure a first defeat for Diss this season.
