GREAT Yarmouth Town entertain high-flyers Saffron Walden Town tomorrow (Wellesley, 3pm) with more than just revenge on their minds.

The Essex side won 2-1 with a last-gasp goal in the season's opening fixture, but there is the matter of the 10 goals shipped by Yarmouth in their last two games to be addressed, writes Gerry Brown.

“Against Diss we obviously hadn't learnt the lessons from the Thetford disaster,” said manager Kevin Cruickshank after Saturday's 5-1 reverse at Brewer's Green Lane. “But we have some very young players and we will get it right. Dale (Gordon) was very helpful and constructive in his comments both during and after the game and the boys have taken them on board.

“Diss are a quality side and caught us cold in the first half. We just didn't learn from our mistakes, as their first three goals were all very similar. We had a bit of a chat at half-time and then had a much better second half.”

Cruickshank always likes to talk about the positives from any performance and there were several even from this hugely disappointing defeat.

“Steve Taylor put in some great work, and was our man of the match in my opinion,” he said. “Clever work on the ball, good distribution, and he slotted in very easily. Once again the support from the youngsters watching was tremendous and made for a great atmosphere, the team really appreciate it.”

Diss boss Paul Tong - former Yarmouth manager - said: “The Bloaters will always be “my” team and it is the first result I look for after Diss. I made a lot of friends there and still keep up with them and what's going on at the club. However, I have a job to do at Diss, but that's all it was today.”

There was better news from the game at the Wellesley where new manager Daryl Godbold led his team to their biggest win of the season, 4-0 over Aylsham Wanderers.

With players beginning to return from injury and with several impressive new signings in recent weeks, things should be looking up for all the club's teams.

But in particular the Reserves who have probably amassed enough points now to ensure relegation will not be a concern. Tomorrow, they are at bottom side Mundford (2).

The Youth game at Dereham was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. This week's game is on Thursday at Plantation Park against Harford Tornadoes (7.45).
