A successful Yarmouth Bowls Festival drew to a close last Friday when Trevor Jermy and Norman Gant won the over-60 open pairs title, sponsored by the Pub on the Prom and the Prom Hotel.

A successful Yarmouth Bowls Festival drew to a close last Friday when Trevor Jermy and Norman Gant won the over-60 open pairs title, sponsored by the Pub on the Prom and the Prom Hotel.

The final was fought out between two pairs from the County Arts bowls club in Norwich. Jermy and Gant came up against Frank Ray and Alan Curtis and after three ends the Jermy pair were 3-1 up. After seven ends of the 12 end final they still held the advantage 8-2. Curtis and his partner then scored a single shot on the next four ends to reduce the lead to 8-6, but a single shot on the last end gave Jermy and Gant the title.

In the semi-finals Jermy and Gant played Geoff Rogers and Peter Miller of Wymondham Dell and recorded a comfortable 17-2 success.

The Curtis pair played the Southwood brothers Colin and Ron from St Neots and the Temple bowls club of East London. The score after six ends was 6-2 to the Curtis pair who went on to score a two and three on the ninth and tenth ends, finally winning 13-6. The losing quarter-finalists were J Malcolm and E Macdonald (Bradwell), G Reeve and P Scott (Acle & Thetford), T Webster and J Watkins (County Arts) and I Morris and P Duke (Skegness).

After the presentations the Festival manager Derek Webster thanked his committee for all their help in the smooth running of the tournament over the past four weeks. Alan Carr, head of tourism for the Borough, closed the festival and thanked all the spectators, competitors. ground staff, helpers, sponsors and advertisers - and the manager for all his hard work.

Webster presented a cheque on behalf of the Festival for over �2,500, made up from money collected on the weekly raffle and players string money, to Jenny Westgate of the James Paget Hospital.

A sum of �200 was also presented to Norfolk EBA president Trevor Webb, which was collected from a raffle during the Veterans v Under 25 game, and will go towards the Norfolk U25 league team's travel costs.
