Thursday - The final stages of the Kingsley Healthcare Men’s Singles were decided, with triple tournament winner Phil Emmerson from York and Diddy Smith from Freethorpe Bowls Club facing each other in the quarter-finals.

Emmerson beat Brian Kilby from Skegness 21-15 and Keith Brand from Swaffham 22-4. Smith played Gary Mallett and David Baird, winning 21-10 and 21-14 respectively.

Acle’s George Tubby earned himself a time against County Arts’ Mark Turner. Tubby won 21-16 and 21-18 while Turner beat David Bryan 21-14 before edging past Norfolk Vice President Richard Church of Freethorpe 21-19.

Champion Mark Royal set up a clash with Jim Malcolm from Bradwell BC. Royal won his games 21-4 and 21-18 while Malcolm won 21-17 and 21-7. Local bowler Dereck Green set up a game against Norfolk BC’s John Tufts. Tufts beat Richard Summers (Norfolk BC) 21-9 and Don Brealey (Oulton Broad) 21-8. Green played Peter Smith of Bradwell and Alan Willer from Ashill, winning 21-17 and 21-20 respectively.

Friday - Suffolk’s Mark Royal came through a tough challenge to claim a repeat win in the Kingsley Healthcare Men’s Singles.

The international star, from Rookery Bowls Club, beat Acle St Edmunds’ George Tubby 21-20 in a high class game played in front of a large crowd,

At five ends Royal led 5-3 and after 10 ends he still held the lead at 10-7. Then, with a run of seven shots without reply, Tubby went into the lead 14-10.

Royal scored three shots on the next end and Tubby then scored four shots without reply, only for Royal to score a three and two singles to level the game at 18-18.

Tubby scored a two on the next end to lead 20-18 and on the final end drew shot with his last wood to lay game. But with his final bowl Royal moved the jack to gain three shots and win the 2015 title.

The semi-final losers were Diddy Smith from Freethorpe John Tufts of Norfolk Bowling Club.

The final of the Eastern Daily Press-sponsored Ladies Triples was played between Claire Turner, Shelia Hillard and skip Josie Tyers and the triple from Tilney St Lawrence of Jackie Hearle, Sue Tolliday and Lynn Quibell.

The Tyers triple held an early lead, being 10-2 in front at five ends, and at 10 ends they still held the upper hand at 17-7.

A score of six shots on the 16th gave the Quibell triple a glimmer of hope but Tyers’ team held on to become the 2015 champions.

Losing semi-finalists were C Neave, V Smith and J Kirby and A White, J Warmsley and E Adams.

Weekend - The early rounds of the Mixed Pairs competition at the Great Yarmouth Festival of Bowls were played.

Last year’s winner and singles champion Mark Royal and his partner Kelly Ling won their first game against M and S Upton 9-7.

They then next played W Willmott and M Himpleman and won 10-8 before seeing off A and S Davis 7-6 to qualify.

Father and daughter John and Lucy Tufts won their section with scores of 13-10, 16-2 and a 10-10 draw.

Margaret and Tony Dunton won two games and drew one to qualify, as did Enid Adams and Graham Roe.

Pat and Malcolm Struthers from the Thetford Staniforth Bowls Club won their three games 16-6, 9-8 and 17-5 while Brian Grint and Lynn Cannell won three games 17-5, 14-5 and 8-5.

Other selected qualifiers were: K Dyer and M Cole, S Tolliday and P Parsons, P and H Wilkinson, S Seily and S Moore, B and S Kilby, J Tucker and D Green and R Hart and S Crysell,

Monday - In the Mixed Pairs competition Lucy Tufts and Wayne Willgress set up a tie against Pat and Malcolm Struthers.

The Tufts pair won their three games 14-5, 12-9 and 10-8 while the Struthers pair drew their first game 7-7 and then won the next two 9-6 and 17-4 to qualify. Graham Roe and Enid Adams will play Russell Hart and Sheila Crysell. The Hart pair won all their games to qualify while the Roe pair only won two games but progressed on shot difference. The next game should be the tie of the quarter-finals, with Kelly Ling and Mark Royal playing B Walker and Phil Emmerson. Both pairs won three games to qualify.

In the final game Carol Neave and Timmy Cox will take on husband and wife duo Peter and Helen Wilkinson.

The Wilkinson pair won three games and the Cox pair two to go through on shot difference. The event is sponsored by the Great Yarmouth Independent Newsagents.

Tuesday - The Mixed Pairs title was retained by Mark Royal and his partner Kelly Ling from the Rookery Bowls Club in Stowmarket. Their opponents in the final were Lucy Tufts and Wayne Willgress.

The game was close after three ends, with the Royal pair leading 3-2. The Suffolk duo then scored six shots without reply to lead 9-3 after six ends of the 14-end final.

The Willgress pair then scored two singles and double to reduce the deficit to 9-5.

Royal and Ling responded by scoring a single shot on the next end, only for their opponents to get a three and a single shot on the next two ends to reduce the gap to just 10-9. On the 13th end Willgress laid two shots, only for Royal to get a lucky result with his last bowl to score a single shot. On the last end Ling drew two shots which Willgress could not alter, leaving Royal and Ling victorious by a margin of 13-9. Losing semi-finalists were Helen and Peter Wilkinson of the County Arts Club and Stalham’s Sheila Crysell and partner Russell Hart. The event was sponsored by Great Yarmouth Independent Newsagents.

Wednesday - The early stages of the Mixed Triples, sponsored by Three Norfolk Square Guest House, were played in bad conditions of strong winds and heavy rain.

Last year’s winners J Warmsley, M Flatman and W Willgress won their three group games 10-6, 25-2 and 23-7 to proceed to the next stage. Peter, Helen and Marcus Wilkinson won their games 9-7, 17-3 and 12-8. B and M Elvin and T Smith drew their first game but won the next two. Phil Parsons, Sue Toliday and Phil Emmerson won their games 11-9, 10-4 and 18-2 as did Ted Eaglan, wife Pam and John Sexton. In a group where three teams won two games, County Arts’ Mark and Clare Turner with skip Trevor Jermy qualified on shot difference.
