A team of swimmers from Great Yarmouth Swimming Club travelled to Wymondham to take part in round two of the Norfolk Junior League.

In this league, swimmers aged 12 and under battle it out to win points for their clubs, which places them for the evening and then gives an overall result for the league at the end of the series of galas.

Round two saw GYSC compete against West Norfolk, Diss Otters, Norwich Swan B and North Norfolk Vikings in a series of closely-fought races.

The team of young swimmers showed great spirit and battled hard to gain third place, beating Norwich Swan B and Vikings, whilst being pipped by Diss and the eventual winners, West Norfolk.

The age nine and 10 boys (Harvey Larner, Thomas Smith, Sam Coman and Billy Wilson) were on particularly fine form, gaining GYSC wins in the 100m medley relay, the 100m freestyle relay and contributing to the age nine girls/boys 100m medley relay (with Skye Nichols and Bethany Gordon).

Billy Wilson won two races in the age nine group, the 25m fly and the 25m breast, earning valuable points, and smashing his previous personal bests.

The Yarmouth boys also showed speed and strength in the age 11s with Benjamin Bedford winning the 50m backstroke and Finley Coman the 50m freestyle. Ben and Finley, along with Nathan and Oliver, were part of the age 11/12 100m freestyle relay which was first.

Other notable swims included Jasmine Coleman who swam an outstanding 50m butterfly that took three seconds off her previous best and Oliver Grimmer’s 50m freestyle which was also his fastest ever and broke the 40-second barrier for the first time for him.

Coach Rhianna James said that team spirit was high, and that the team’s performance had been a significant improvement from the first round.

Swimmers were: Anna Pearce, Benjamin Bedford, Bethany Gordon, Billy Wlison, Finley Coman, Francesca Brown, Harvey Larner, Honeysuckle Carlyon-Blanchard, Jasmine Coleman, Mollie Medler, Nathan Pitman, Oliver Grimmer, Sam Coman, Skye Nichols, Thomas Smith and Zoe Land.
