Bradwell Bowls Club

THERE were two highlights for the club this week. Shirley Lloyd, Ann Seddon and Dahlia MacDonald were presented with their official Norfolk county badges and the Chairman’s Invitation Day.

The county badges were presented by president Ann Read prior to the match against Essex. Ann and Shirley have played against some of the Essex ladies before, the result this time going in favour of Essex.

On Sunday, the Chairman’s Invitation Day saw 16 blocks of triples from clubs around the area take part in very windy conditions.

The winners were A Lockitt, T Francis and V Cooper from Beccles Institution A on 30 points, runners-up D Purnell. K Hewitt and K Saward from Bradwell C on 29 with Lowestoft Railway in third on 26.

In the league matches, Bradwell A men’s Malta Cup team played Acle A and managed to gain one point from a strong home team with Eric Brooks, Jim Malcolm and Colin Deverill sneaking a one victory in a very close game 17-16.

The B team at home to Martham had two close games with a draw on one rink and success for Alan Harrison, Alan Collins and John Watson 18-13. The final result went in Martham’s favour 6.5-2.5.

In the Federation League, both teams travelled, the Red team losing at Caister 49-58 with Micheal Parker, Peter Ridler and Peter Smith claiming two points with a 23-14 win.

In a closely-fought contest at Great Plumstead, the Green team were victorious with a result of 7-2 (52-50) with only two shots separating any of the scores – Alan Harrison, Jean Moore and John Ward winning 19-17.

The EBA fours saw Martham defeat Bradwell A 4.5-0.5, the half point coming from the block of Terry Gallant, Ted Connellan and John Sergent who, with one player absent, produced a brilliant draw at 17-17.

Bradwell B away to the Norfolk Police lost 4-1 on the fast-paced green at the Norfolk Bowling Club with Alan Harrison, Roy Turner, Peter Ridler and John Watson winning 20-15.

In the first of the afternoon’s Sunshine League games, Bradwell had a resounding win at home against Corton 72-39 with the best rink of the day Ann Baker, Kathleen Hewitt and Andy Cameron 30-11.

The Lothingland League game this week saw Bradwell at Somerleyton.

Despite winning on two rinks the points 5-2 went to the home side and the overall score finished 65-82, the best performance from Dianne Purnell, John Everingham and Paul Vincent 26-18.

In the Lowestoft and District League, Bradwell at home to Sparrows Nest won 94-73 with the home side’s best result from Thelma Bradnum, Andy Cameron and Alan Collins 90-9.

Rollesby Bowls Club

AWAY to Salhouse Bell in the first leg of the Broadland Rotary Shield, Rollesby fared a little better than expected.

Honours were shared over the four rinks but Rollesby came out with their noses just in front and take three-shot lead into the home leg. Score: 68-65. J Avery, J Seeranj, T Avery 20-11; J Palmer, S Daniels, J Catchpole 18-17.

Playing Burlingham at the neutral Potter Heigham green in the Watering Bowl proved a harder task, and once again each team won on two rinks.

However a 21-18 J Avery, F Walker, T Avery win and a 21-14 J Temple, S Daniels, B Temple victory, together with a narrow defeat of 16-18, were not enough to progress to the next round with the remaining rink going down heavily 11-26. Overall score: 69-76.

Rollesby’s cards after the Yarmouth League match at Acle looked like a road crash. Heavy defeats of 14-29, 9-34 and 12-23 resulted in a 56-106 overall score. J Avery, F Walker, T Avery 21-20 – points 1-6.

Entertaining newly-promoted Hemsby in the Broadland League, Rollesby dropped points, losing again on two rinks 11-16 and 18-19.

Convincing wins on the other rinks, however, took the match with an overall score of 87-56, points 5-2. E Taylor, T Wright, G Curtis 27-11 and J Avery, A Palmer, T Avery 31-10.

At Filby B in the three wood County League, Rollesby didn’t really compete and crashed to a 9-0 points defeat. Overall score 30-81.

Ormesby Bowls Club

Ormesby’s three wood Federation Red team played at home against Martham. It was a close game but Ormesby lost (5-4) 46-42. Winning Ormesby blocks were B Horne, M Hart and F Brumby 18-7 and S Stamp, R Myers and A Stamp 15-12.

On the same evening Ormesby three wood Federation Blue team played at Burlingham and lost 3-6 (46–54). Winning Ormesby block was R Pope, M Chegwidden and P Evans.

Ormesby Ladies’ Malta Cup team played at home against Martham and lost 1-4 (35-76). Ormesby’s winning block was M Sullivan, A Hicks and S Stamp 17-16.

Ormesby’s EBA team entertained Yarmouth A. It was an enjoyable evening although somewhat damp with a disappointing score for Ormesby losing on all three rinks for a 5-0 (40-64) result.

The Yarmouth League team visited Gorleston. They lost 6.5-0.5 (67-98).

They drew on one rink. Ormesby players were R Myers, N Cheevers and F Brumby.

Ormesby Men’s Malta Cup team visited Acle B and won 5-2 (72-70).

Winning Ormesby blocks were I Carter, R Pope and F Brumby 26-12 and D Picot, B Horne and K Dongray 19-18.

Martham Bowls Club

IN the Yarmouth League, Martham A played Gorleston Conservatives at home, winning 98-59 (6.5-0.5). Top block was T Punchard, G Harrison and J Dyball 26-10.

In the Watering Bowl they were at home to Martham B when Martham A won 86-48. Top block was J Hudson, T Sewell and P S Randell.

Martham B had a win of two shots at Winterton, scoring 80-82 and gaining four points.

This was due to the bowling of Sandra Faircloth, Mike Gallant and Jane Watson who won their block 26-14.

In the Norfolk League, Martham A at home to Bacton had a very close game, losing by just one shot, 49-50, but obtaining four points. Top block was Jude Waed, Pat Dickinson and Paul Hurkett 21-10.

Martham B were away to Ormesby.

Thanks to the brilliant bowling of Maureen Brighton, Sandra Faircloth and Debra Nicholson who won 27-9, Martham B won the match 42-46 (4-5).

Caister Bowls Club

Results for week starting May 16.

Federation – County League: Caister A playing Bradwell at home won 58-49 (7-2), Caister Castaways away to Rollesby won 56-27 (9-0), Caister Centurions at home to Filby won 54-38 (6-3).

Yarmouth & District League: Caister A at home against Burlingham won 84-70 (5.5-1.5).

Caister B had two games, at home to Halvergate they won 84-54 (6-1) and then away at Hickling they lost 65-75 (1.5-5.5).

Caister Ladies playing Freethorpe at home lost 45-66 (1-5).

Watering Bowl: there were mixed results with Caister A playing Potter Heigham at Acle winning 70-68, Caister B playing Acle at Halvergate losing 51-98.

EBA – Hansell League: Caister won at Great Plumstead 70-56 (4-1).

Malta Cup: Caister men won at Gorleston 90-56 (6-1), Caister ladies lost at home to Freethorpe 49-63 (1-5).

Top Club Competition: Caister played North Walsham at home Sunday evening and lost 1-4.
