AT the first weekend of the ASA East Region age group championships the crowd were treated to a very special swim.

Great Yarmouth Swimming Club’s Jack Utting broke the British age group long course record for 13-year-old boys’ 100 metres backstroke.

Jack has had his eye on the record for a few months and trained especially to achieve his goal of going under the previous best of 1:01.29.

He attacked the race from the offset and turned at the halfway point in 29.82. It was then that spectators realised that his attempt was on target.

Spurred on by the knowledgeable crowd, who were on their feet cheering, Jack stormed away in a strong second length and finished in a time of 1:00.70, over half-a-second inside the previous record.

Great Britain has produced some excellent backstrokers that have come through the age groups, and Jack (pictured) is a talent to be watched.
