Broadland-GY 14 Keyworth 27

Broadland-GY’s senior playing season concluded as they hosted touring side Keyworth RFC from Nottinghamshire, in a match played in good spirit.

Keyworth got off to a great start as a tap penalty from short range was taken quickly for an early score.

The visitors continued with the pressure and were rewarded through persistent pressure as they crossed for a second. Broadland began to find their feet and line breaks from Lee Raven and Asa Morrison moved the ball deep inside Keyworth’s half.

Centre Shaun Howley, managed to get his hands on the ball and took the ball wide, looking for an offload, he could not find support and headed for the goaline. With a devastating sidestep on the full back he crossed to score. Lightfoot converted. Keyworth broke to score near the end of the half, but Broadland kept themselves in contention, as they kept the ball alive at the end of the half, Dwyer and French got the ball in short, and scrum half Phil Buckley was spoilt for choice as picked out Kieran Wilkes, who crashed in from 10 metres (converted Lightfoot).

The second half kicked off, and Broadland’s defence that shone with superb tackling from Mason and Lightfoot.

Flanker James Dudley had a great break from a loose ball at the back of the scrum, but without support the opportunity was missed, Keyworth went over to stretch their lead.

But Broadland kept pushing, with Jake Clarke having a couple of good runs from deep. The experience of scrum half Russell Clarke showed as he utilise Broadland’s notably bigger pack, to move the ball steadily closer, but the Great Yarmouth side could not make the final break, Keyworth concluded the game with a try.

The Sudbury team were a well-drilled outfit and ran in a number of tries, but the Broadland-GY U13s never lost heart, especially Josh Soares, who was named man-of-the match. The remainder of the mini/youth section competed in an end-of-season fun tag to complete the regular season. Next week the club will host a youth/mini festival over on the 5th/6th May, with 46 teams taking part from across the country. Games kick off at 9am both days and run until approx 6pm.
