Perhaps not quite so intense, but very much a sprint in many respects was Saturday's Lord Mayor's Classic 5k in Norwich - an event which had two of the Great Yarmouth Road Runners in attendance, writes Mike Spragg.

With the requirement of reaching the halfway point in under 10 minutes, both Andy Peck and Paul Brookshaw had their work cut out, but both acquitted themselves well in a quality field.

Brookshaw was running his second race in the space of a week, having led the way home for the Seasiders in the inaugural staging of the Humpty Dumpty 10k at Reedham the previous weekend.

Over an exciting and well-marshalled loop course, very well set out by Pat Brightman and her team, he was followed by Mike Spragg, Stephen Etherington and John Hills. Fighting out a close finish were Ed Shulver and Alan Ward, while Mark Peach, Rod Shulver, Jim Spong and Denise Etherington made up an impressive contingent.

Similarly impressive was the turnout at Broome the following Wednesday for another 10k event with a slightly but not entirely different group of runners.

Quite a different sort of course, however, being out-and-back. This time it was Paul Evans leading the way home with Stephen Etherington and Chris Harbord making up a male contingent which, on this occasion, was matched by an equal number of ladies in the form of Karen Manning, Kate Evans and Denise Etherington.

To round off a busy week, with one race or another on four of the seven days, Richard Blake and John Bone popped up at the Downham Market 5k on Thursday evening, Blake winning his age division and Bone thoroughly enjoying the proceedings.

As indeed will all those club members who are to take part in this Sunday's Mutford Relay, an excellent event in so many different ways, not least in the way that it probably brings together the greatest number of club members in a single place at a single time.
