In a lacklustre performance, Winterton slipped to their first league defeat of the season against near neighbours Caister.

Kevin Percival won the toss for the first time this season and not surprisingly elected to bat first.

However, Winterton were only able to post a below-par score of 157 all out, which could have been even lower but for the 31 extras added to the total.

The two main stands of the innings were of 34 for the second wicket between Bryn Clarke (24) and Geoff Roper (12) and 35 for the fourth wicket between Clarke and Martin Witheridge (24).

However, all batsmen were dismissed when looking set to push on. Nevertheless, at 75 for three in the 20th over, Winterton looked well set.

With the score on 84, Witheridge, who was looking in his best form of the season, was bowled by Southwell and Josh Austin was also bowled shortly afterwards. The star of the previous week, Liam Boylan, was unfortunately run out for 11 in a mix-up with his captain. Percival (13) and Tom Roper briefly flourished, with the younger man playing some good shots in his 17. R Kerrison then accounted for both players with the score on 134.

The ninth wicket went down with the score on 138 but the returning Richard Larner (11 not out) and Tom Whichelow (5) eked out a further 19 runs before the returning Sims accounted for Whichelow with the first ball of his second spell.

Caister set about their task with some relish and Simon Kerrison found the boundary regularly with some good shots, while Richard Stokes worked the ball around to keep the scoring well up with the required rate. None of the Winterton bowlers were able to exert enough pressure to force errors from the batsmen. The pair took the score to 59 before Kerrison miscued a pull off a ball from Percival to be caught by Clarke for 41. James Kerrison was run out for one shortly afterwards, following a fine throw by Boylan from the boundary. Johnson joined Stokes and although never appearing totally settled, kept his wicket intact to the end of the innings. Stokes began to open up and moved onto a deserved 50.

At 141 for two, it was only a matter of time before Caister secured the runs required for victory, although Mark Hambrook caused a slight wobble when he accounted for Stokes for 55 and Sims for four in successive overs.

Caister reached their target in the 40th over, with Johnson remaining unbeaten on 29 not out.

Winterton need to improve their performance in the next game against league leaders Ketteringham Hall.

A third win in a row for Caister who sit second in the table early in the season. Midas Components MoM: R Kerrison.
