CAISTER had two big games over the last week. On Saturday they won 6-1 at home to Beccles Caxton and on Tuesday they beat third-placed visitors Horsford 3-0. Both games were a delight to watch, and boosted Caister's hopes of senior football next season.
Caister set the tempo for the Dolphin Autos Anglian Combination Division Two match against Beccles Caxton, catching the visitors cold by scoring within two minutes. Moore followed up good work by Crane by scoring with his first touch.
Within five minutes it was 2-0, again Moore was the scorer, his turn and shot too good for the unsighted keeper.
After eight minutes Snowling tried to chip the keeper from 40 yards, he couldn't hold the ball and it dropped to the feet of Holsworth who happily tapped the ball into goal. Moore completed his hat-trick in the 12th minute to make it 4-0.
Beccles started to get back into the game and the Caister back four began to earn their money with a disciplined performance.
James Corke pounced on a loose ball following a corner and got his fifth goal of the season just before half-time.
Caxton came out with more purpose in the second half and got a goal back. Their forward looked to have handled the ball before taking it round Beales. Shortly after Beales had to come off with a broken nose and Moore donned the gloves to go from goal scorer to goal stopper.
Caister got a sixth 30 minutes from time through Fitzgerald following good work from Holsworth.
On Tuesday Horsford were the team full of energy in the first half and Caister struggled to get any momentum in a very difficult match.
Hollis, deputising in goal for Beales, found himself under pressure for most of the half, but the Caister back four were again solid and Horsford were restricted to long shots, which Hollis dealt with comfortably.
Caister thought they had got the opening goal when Holsworth chipped the keeper, but his shot hit a post and was cleared. At half time it was 0-0.
Caister stepped up to the pace for the second half and it was Horsford that had to do the defending. Caister opened the scoring when Blake turned and smashed home a shot at the near post. Fitzgerald got the second. Good work down the right wing between Crane and Jarvis ended with a Jarvis cross being headed home.
With Horsford throwing everything at Caister, they were defending deep and hitting Horsford on the counter-attack. From one of these counters Fitzgerald got his second and Caister's third.
It left Caister (54 points from 27 games) second to Corton (59 from 24) with Beccles Caxton (51 from 29) and Horsford (50 from 27) also in the promotion chase. The teams have to complete 30 games.
Next match home to Wortwell on Tuesday, April 29 (kick-off 6.30pm). Anybody wishing to purchase coach tickets for the final on May 5 can contact Paul on 07966 178074.
