GREAT Yarmouth pub the Camden Tavern could host the mother of all celebrations if its football teams can achieve a historic Sunday best double.

For its two Sunday teams are just one step away from reaching the finals in the Norfolk Senior and Junior Cup competitions.

If they can win the trophies it will be the first time any club has achieved the feat in the same season.

The first team, managed by Andrew Algar, booked a place in the Senior Cup semi-finals with a 3-0 victory over an AFC Wanderers side previously unbeaten in all competitions.

Gary Todd, Dale Cockerill and Ricci Butler scored the goals which took Camden a step closer to retaining the trophy they won by beating Delaneys in a penalty shoot-out at Carrow Road.

In an ominous warning to the remaining teams Algar said: “We've made a couple of signings this season and if anything we are a bit stronger than last year.”

The team, which has several players from Gorleston and Lowestoft's Ridgeons League sides, won Yarmouth League Division One last year - an eighth top title success in nine years - and is top of the table again. The one blemish on Tavern's record is a 5-3 defeat by Star and Garter - which they avenged with a 21-0 hammering.

Algar, who has managed the first team for 10 years, said the Reserves, managed by Jamie Ward and Michael Green, had exceeded expectations in their debut season, especially with their cup run.

“It's a bit of a surprise for them to get that far. We didn't really expect them to do that well.”

A hat-trick from Matty Bowles clinched a 3-1 win over Linfa - a Norwich-based team of Portuguese-speaking Africans.

Algar said: “They are good bunch of boys, and there is a good social side as well.”
