Camden Tavern’s farewell party spoiled by treble-winners Marlborough

Camden Tavern’s hopes of a winning finale to a success-filled 20 years were dashed as Marlborough rounded off a memorable season in style at Carrow Road when they lifted the Norfolk Sunday Senior Cup.

Having already won the Norwich Sunday League Premier Division title and League Cup, Marlborough completed a rare treble thanks to a goal rush just before the break.

After an even opening 35 minutes the city side, managed by Mark Jones, took the lead when Jason Armes fired home from the edge of the area, with his shot going in off the underside of the bar.

Danny McKail quickly doubled their advantage with a close-range header and it was 3-0 before the break as Danny Brown converted.

Great Yarmouth side Camden – playing their final competitive match – made a bright start to the second period and pulled one back through Ricci Butler, a goalscorer in Haven Bridge United’s recent Norfolk Primary Cup final success.

But there was to be no fairytale ending for the side managed by Luke Price and Steve Bishop, who desperately wanted to regain the trophy they won in 2007 in memory of number one backer and former pub landlord Anthony “Bish” Bishop, who died in March.

Marlborough, who won the cup in 2009 but were beaten 3-0 by Dog House in last year’s final, soon restored their three-goal cushion through McKail’s second of the night. They then saw out the game in impressive fashion to secure more silverware.

The 10th and final Norfolk FA final of the season was watched by a crowd of 551.
