IT was not the winning, but the honour of being part of history at Gorleston Golf Club on Easter Sunday with the centenary of the Arthur Fell Cup, writes David James.
A field of 81 teed-off from both the first and tenth tees, including 13 past winners, all hoping for a flash of brilliance.
The weather was not kind to the players with persistent rain and gusty winds throughout the morning making good scoring difficult.
The winner, 18 handicapper Nigel Stone, was one of the early starters, whose score of two up could not be matched by any of the other morning players.
Afternoon competitor James Chadd played exceptionally well, also recording a score of two up, the tie being decided in Nigel's favour on a last nine-hole count-back.
Nigel Stone has been a member at Gorleston since 2001 and was delighted with this win and hopes his form will continue during the rest of the year.
In celebration of the event players were invited to enjoy a pint of beer at 100p in the clubhouse bar. We doubt Sir Arthur would have envisaged in 1909 the impact his cup would have on the club, but we hope he would have been proud.
