RACE ace John Burton held his nerve to clinch to win a first JEC Jaguar XK Championship title on Sunday.

Fritton-based Burton was first in his class and second overall in the series final at the Mallory Park circuit.

The race was reduced to 30 minutes due to bad weather conditions that had contributed to an accident during qualifying. Going into the race with a four-point lead, Burton never looked likely to relinquish his position, completing an impressive drive in his 1952 XK120 coupe.

He said: “The weather was worse than predicted which made conditions more difficult. so it made winning that much more special.

“After finishing runner-up last season I was delighted to go one better this time round.”

The 48-year-old businessman has been joined on the circuit by daughter Charley, who will be racing VW Beetles next season.

He will receive the challenge trophy at an awards ceremony in Oxford next month.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club championship takes in circuits including Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Spa in Belgium.
