A squad (pictured) attended the Eastern Region Open Championships in Norwich on Sunday and came away with a collection of trophies.

First up were Ebony Halladay and Samuel Snowling in the sixth kyu and under kumite section. Samuel, fighting in his first competition, showed excellent co-ordination and control and took a well deserved first place.

Ebony, in only her second competition, was content with a second place in her kumite event, however she went on to win two first place trophies in the individual low grade kata and partnered her brother, Travis, to take the low grade team kata.

The junior high grade events were highly contested and both Hannah Wheeler-Smith and Brittany Pipe didn't make the trophies in their kumite section despite putting on good shows.

Both performed well in their kata event with Hannah taking third place and Brittany finishing a close second.

The boys did somewhat better in their kumite event. Callum Bircham finished out of the trophies as did Joshua Thompson who was beaten by his brother Frasier in the quarter- finals.

Frasier had some very hard fights to reach the final, where he had to settle for second place, losing by an ippon (one point).

In the cadets, Charlotte Fisher fought with determination and aggression as she took second place in the fifth to first kyu section.

James Allan also finished second in the black belt kumite and performed a magnificent chung-mu to take first place in the kata.

Dale Halladay was the only adult representing Phoenix Karate and certainly did the club proud when he won his section. Taking his black belt opponent into encho-sen (extra time) he executed a perfect chudan mawashi geri (mid- section round kick) to the back.

Anyone wishing to join the club training in Martham, Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Hopton and Lowestoft can contact instructors Charles Trorey 4th Dan on 01502 730171 and Vivianne Trorey 2nd Dan on 07895 550168 for details.

Past students and their families are invited to attend the celebration, 25 years of karate with Charlie at The Arena Nightclub, Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth on Sunday, July 20.
