DEFENDER Adam Drury made no apologies for the lack of flowing football on show as Norwich City opened up an 11-point lead at the top of League One.

The Canaries have one foot in the Championship thanks to substitute Chris Martin's superb late winner against second-placed Leeds United.

Left-back Drury, making his first senior appearance for two months, accepted the top-of-the-table clash was far from a classic, but the scenes that greeted Martin's goal and the final whistle demonstrated that all but the 2,000-plus travelling fans went home from Carrow Road very happy indeed.

Drury, sidelined for seven matches by a thigh injury before spending the next two on the bench, was recalled in place of Michael Rose - and was delighted to play his part in such a crucial victory.

He said: "It was never a particularly fluent game, a bit kick and rush to be honest, but at this stage of the season you don't really care as long as you win, which is what we did today.

"In terms of football, it wasn't a pretty game to watch but I shouldn't think too many people are bothered about that tonight. It's all about results now. We want to play great football and everyone knows this season we've played great football in a lot of the games, but at the minute it doesn't matter.

"They matched us up and went with a diamond formation to try to stop us playing, which they did at their place in the second half. It ended up being a bit of a scrap but you don't worry about that when you win."

Martin's 21st goal of the season came with little more than a minute of normal time remaining as he dived to head home a cross from fellow substitute Stephen Hughes - poetic justice after Jermaine Beckford's injury time winner at Elland Road in October.

"It was a great finish - ideal for us and the reverse of what happened at Leeds," said Drury. "The same happened to them today as happened to us there and it's absolutely gutting. Thankfully we're on the right end of it this time."

The goal also illustrated the options within the squad available to manager Paul Lambert. Said Drury: "We've got a great squad now and if you're not playing well week in, week out, then you won't get in the side. The gaffer's got people on the bench who can win you games."

Lambert's men now look certain to win promotion but, like his manager, 31-year-old Drury is taking nothing for granted. He added: "No one is saying we've achieved anything yet, especially in the dressing room because at this moment in time we haven't - and it's happened before where teams have blown up.

"We've got to make sure we don't. We've got a big Easter coming up and if we get two positive results, I hope we'll be where we want to be and get out of this league."

Drury was the sponsors' official man of the match on his return, and the full-back added:"I'd have swapped it for the win but we won anyway, so to get both is a bonus. I felt a bit tired towards the end because of the way the game was - very high tempo and not a lot of quality. But for some reason I wasn't so tired after the 89th minute. After we scored, the tiredness seemed to drain out of me then."
