PE staff and students from East Norfolk Sixth Form College were invited to join Tony Smith, Mayor of Great Yarmouth, for lunch in recognition of recently being named as BBC East's Sports School of the Year for 2009.

On arrival at the Town Hall the group were escorted to the mayor's parlour. Following informal introductions and congratulations, the mayor presented Steve Mooney, head of PE, with a shield of the borough's coat of arms as a recognition of achievement. The group were then led into the assembly halls, where the mayor discussed the history of the building, the architecture and the paintings. This was followed by lunch and a visit to the council chambers, where the students and staff had the opportunity to ask the mayor questions.

Head of PE at the College, Steve Mooney, said: “As a college we were extremely grateful to the mayor and mayoress for their kind hospitality in inviting our sports students and staff to the town hall. The students selected to attend were carefully picked, as they have stood out on and off the sports field.

“The student feedback from the event was positive, as the mayor gave an inspiring talk about the history of Great Yarmouth and how aspirations can be achieved by aiming high and working towards your goals.

“I was delighted and very appreciative that the borough council acknowledged the fact that the college has won the Norfolk and BBC Look East Sports School of the Year and that our students could be part of the celebrations at the town hall.”
