Halvergate's Sunday team had a very good win over league leaders and previously unbeaten Belton in the Mid Norfolk League Division Two by 90 runs. The game was played at South Walsham which resulted in 21 points for the Hares against six points for the visitors.

Belton won the toss and decided to give their bowlers first use of the new ball on a pitch still drying out from the previous day's heavy rain.

However a superb 113 runs by opener Steven Clarke, which was his third successive century at South Walsham, helped the Hares' batting to an excellent 212-4 at the end of their 40 overs.

He shared in a good opening partnership of 42 runs with young Luke Hannant, 10, before he was given out lbw in the 11th over. William Gilder, 14, then helped Clarke add a further 51 runs before he was bowled by P White in the 20th over after the score had reached 93.

Young Tom Booth, 12, shared in a stand of 71 runs before Clarke's brilliant innings was ended in the 33rd over after he was caught and bowled by P White with the score on 171. He hit eight fours and five sixes in his 113 runs, which was a model display of concentration and fine stroke play.

Tim Crane and Chris Mills both scored 11 not out as the Hares' innings closed on 212 runs. Belton conceded 41 extras that included 19 wides.

Belton wicketkeeper W Goreham is wished a speedy recovery after sustaining a cut eye that required a hospital visit to be stitched.

Belton quickly lost both opening batsmen to find themselves struggling on six runs for two wickets in the sixth over. Tom Booth bowled W Ladmore for three, while a catch by younger brother James helped Shaun Howley dismiss R Ashling for just a single.

However, a partnership between P White, five, and S Ali put on 56 runs before White was bowled by A Booth.

The hard hitting Ali then added a further 51 runs with A Khan, which took the Belton reply to 113 and put them back into the game.

Just when the Hares needed a breakthrough, skipper T Crane bowled Khan in the 30th over and in the same over, a catch by Shaun Howley helped him get the wicket of S Kapour without scoring to leave Belton still on 113 but now with five wickets down.

Another catch by Shaun Howley off A Booth's bowling helped end the innings of S Ali, after he had scored an excellent 68 runs which included nine fours and one six.

When Tom Booth bowled G Moar, one, and Tim Crane bowled D Bareham, two, the end was in sight at 120-8 in the 34th over. Three balls later it was all over after R Lille was run out without scoring with the Belton total on 122-9. The unlucky Goreham was unable to bat.

All the Hares' bowlers did well as did the young fielders who backed them up with some good catches. Skipper Tim Crane took 3-38, Tom Booth 2-17, his father Alan Booth 2-31 and Shaun Howley 1-24 along with two good catches.

Thanks are due to groundsman David Watkins for preparing an excellent wicket to play on in spite of the recent wet weather.

This week's matches see the first XI at home to Shipdham, the A XI away at Frettenham with the Sunday team having no game.
