Broadland-Great Yarmouth 10, Swaffham 0

Broadland-Great Yarmouth recorded their first shut-out of the season as they prevented visitors Swaffham from scoring. An exemplary defence was com-plemented by some well-worked attacking play.

Broadland kicked off and Swaffham's early attempts at using big running on the inside was contained well by the Yarmouth side. Swaffham kicked their way down to Broadland's 22 metre line and an attacking surge was halted by a string of solid tackles, most notably by scrum half Simon Ruddick a metre short of the Broadland goal line. Broadland cleared their lines and worked their way back upfield.

Centre Jamie Alfshinpour had a dazzling run, down the wing and back across the field, complemented by another bulldozer-style run by lock Royce Chiddle. Broadland crept closer, captain Matt Beckett carried on, as did flanker Asa Morrison. But with Swaffham penalised for not rolling away at the tackle, fly half Doggett neatly kicked a penalty for the lead.

Broadland's attacking play continued and flanker Richard Ruddick broke clear after evading two tackles in midfield. Broadland attempted a penalty but it went wide.

Broadland made one replacement at the half with Ryan Gallie joining the pack and they started the second half with intent and orchestrated some well-constructed attacking play. Broadland's lineout was solid and the scrums were an even contest. Broadland certainly had an advantage out wide, but the wings had been given minimal opportunities to capitalise on this.

Broadland made a second substitution with Steve Weston coming on. Broadland backs Doggett and Lightfoot then provided an array of testing kicks at the Swaffham back line.

Spotting a weakness on the Swaffham wing, home wing Joe Payne kicked over, the ball landing and bouncing between the Swaffham wing and fullback. Payne kicked through and scooped up the ball to score under the posts (converted Doggett).

A yellow card for hooker Rye Bilyard reduced Broadland to 14 men, but consistent, solid tackling in the Broadland midfield contained the visitors. Broadland had a comfortable win, but knew more scores had beckoned.

Tomorrow (weather permitting) Broadland travel to Hadleigh in the league.
