FOR the last two years East Norfolk Sixth Form College has won the Clifford Dixon Trophy as the best for sport in the British Colleges' Sport (BCS) East Region.

The new season got underway this week with the first series of tournaments held at Cambridge Regional College. The performances laid a clear marker that East Norfolk intend to make it a hat-trick.

In the squash tournament, Sara Ward became the East of England women's champion with overwhelming wins against girls from CoWA in King's Lynn and South East Essex Sixth Form College. She now goes on to represent the East in the National finals at Loughborough next Easter.

Scott O'Keefe found the opposition a bit tougher in the men's event but he won four of his eight matches to finish fourth, getting East Norfolk valuable Clifford Dixon points.

In the table tennis tournament, Sophie Watts won the whole tournament and like Sara will represent the East Region at the national finals. Although Sophie lost one of her matches, she had beaten her main rival and went through on the countback.

Just like the squash tournament, the men's table tennis was of a very high standard and Chris Batey found the going tough as he only won two out of his seven matches but many defeats were close.

In the mixed table tennis Sophie partnered Andy Guest and both played well to win three matches and lose two to finish in third place. They won eight valuable points towards the Clifford Dixon Trophy.

In the badminton competition, Charlie Aldred was selected in the women's singles and it soon became apparent that it was going to be a two-horse race between Charlie and the girl from Hills Road in Cambridge. Both players won their eight other matches and then had to play each other in what was technically the final.

Charlie was narrowly beaten 15-13 to end runner-up She Charlie should go through to Loughborough as the Hills Road girl also won the mixed doubles and will represent the East at this event.

Lee Robinson played fantastically to win the men's badminton tournament. After a loss to the Hills Road player, Lee went through to the semi-finals as the runner-up in his pool. He won his semi-final 21-15 against Cambridge Regional College and then came across the same player from Hills Road. This time Lee beat his opponent 21-9 to take the title.

In the mixed badminton, Lee and Charlie made it through to the final with ease but lost to the Hills Road pair 15-9 to take the runner-up position.

Steve Mooney, the college's head of PE, said: “The performances of all the East Norfolk players were outstanding they all really enjoyed playing against the best in the east region. Not only did they play well but they outstanding ambassadors for our college and the town!”
