THE men's and women's rugby squads at East Norfolk Sixth Form College have been extremely busy training and playing since the start of term seven weeks ago and both teams have qualified to represent the county in the “Play On” campaign.
THE men's and women's rugby squads at East Norfolk Sixth Form College have been extremely busy training and playing since the start of term seven weeks ago and both teams have qualified to represent the county in the “Play On” campaign.
The men's rugby team have been the busiest team in the college. They start with the disadvantage of not having played together before joining the college and after a trial match against a well-organised Wymondham High School side and a Daily Mail Cup match defeat against Langley, things started to come together with a victory over Gresham's second team. It took a final last-minute try by Nat Rogers to steal victory and boost the team's confidence.
This confidence was carried forward to a Norfolk County 10-a-side tournament held at Crusaders RFC. The East Norfolk team played brilliantly to end up runners-up behind Easton College. Along the way East Norfolk beat COWA, Paston College and UEA Freshers, with Jamal Mills scoring an incredible seven tries. East Norfolk will progress to the next round of this tournament which is at Eastern Counties standard where we will play against the winners and runners up from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
The women's team played in the same tournament and played a 15-a-side match against a UEA Freshers team. This was the first 15-a-side match ever played by the college's, as they concentrate on the seven or 10-a-side game. It was a tight match with the single try being scored by captain Jodie Rettie. Coach Steve Mooney said: “It was great to see so many girls playing rugby for the first time and really enjoying the experience. Just like the boys the girls will also progress onto the Eastern Counties tournament later in November.”
The men's last match of half-term was against Easton College in a British Colleges league match. Once again the East Norfolk team played with confidence and won 31-20, thanks to a hat-trick of tries by man-of-the-match Matt Page.
