Great Yarmouth & District Football League

CATFIELD on Wednesday night lifted the first silverware of the season after they defeated MK United 3-0 at the Wellesley in the HA Holmes League Cup final.

The match was not as one-sided as the scoreline suggests as Catfield goalkeeper Teaurean Molloy won the man of the match award for four or five brilliant saves.

MK could have been two up inside three minutes but Molloy saved brilliantly when called upon. Catfield then fired two quick goals to give themselves daylight. However, a mazy run by Hogg through three players again saw Molloy save well at his feet.

In the second half the game was slightly more comfortable for Catfield but again MK created chances. However, the game was made safe late on with a turn and shot into the top corner to give Catfield a fifth consecutive league cup.

The two teams followed this up Saturday with a Wiltshire Cup semi-final at Burgh Castle. MK though missing several players were not quite as competitive as a hat-trick from Pillar put the home side to the sword.

So Catfield set up a repeat of last season’s Wiltshire Cup final where they will face Albion on Easter Monday morning at the Wellesley with a 10.30am kick-off.

The Division Two title race is as you were as both Caister CC and Belton won before their Burgess Cup final meeting.

Caister CC won a tight game 2-1 at Wellington to stay five points clear at the top of the table. Belton recorded a comprehensive 8-0 win against depleted South Yarmouth at Burgh Castle.

Belton have two games in hand, and six wins from the last six games will see the Division Two title lifted.

Prostar Windows are four points clear in third after a 4-0 win over Arches at Mill Lane, who were sporting a couple new signings.

MK United Reserves won a tight game 1-0 at home to Carpathians to swap places with them while Caister Youth moved up to eighth after a 7-0 win at home to Martham A in Division One, and Caister United A’s fate is confirmed after defeat at Peelers.

The result means Caister will finish bottom of the table, but the heart and spirit of the players of the club cannot be faulted, and the management must also be congratulated on the club’s never-say-die attitude.

Yarmouth United meanwhile won a tight game at Norfolk n Chance 4-3 in a sporting game. Feathers could not muster a side and so Yarmouth International gain three points.

Albion meanwhile jumped back up to second with a 2-1 win at Bohemians in a replayed match from December which was abandoned due to injury.

This week sees some important games in the race for the two divisional titles as Catfield entertain Norfolk n Chance while MK United host Feathers.

In Division Two, Caister Community Centre can stretch their lead at the top to seven points with a win at home to Caister Youth, as Belton are inactive.

The league will announce on Tuesday its March club of the month at the committee meeting while South Yarmouth will also be presented with their February award.

Wednesday also sees the two Percy Nockolds Trophy semi-finals on the Magdalen playing field as Yarmouth Peelers play Caister Youth and Belton face Caister Community Centre for a place in the April 27 final at Halvergate.

The league is inviting applications for teams wanting to join the league. It is open to any team or club within 12 miles and caters for male adults from 16 onwards.
