ACLE kissed goodbye to this season's hopes of winning the Mummery Cup when they caved in against a very strong Yachtsmen's side at Trafford Park in round two.

It could have been so different had the United strikers taken their chances, but they missed those opportunities against a home side who pushed the ball around in Acle fashion.

And the visitors can only blame suicidal defending as two goals from ex-Acle player Danny Self and Andy Easteaugh gave Wroxham a comfortable passage into the next round.

Acle knew they were up against it, having entertained the same side the week before in an Anglian Combination Premier Division game which ended 2-2.

But the Ridgeons League club side strengthened their line-up by including Andrew Key and he, together with Self, dictated long periods of the game.

They supported their forwards with the knowledge that they had the back-up of experienced Leighton Miller and Matt Banham in defence, and it is credit to Acle that they created the chances they did.

Having realised the magnitude of the task, Acle's manager Tony Ward will know his players failed to reach their normal standard and didn't handle the atmosphere or Wroxham's determination in the second period to get their season back on track.

Acle allowed their ex-team mate Self to dictate for long periods.

Acle can only hope that Scott Foreman and Daniel Foreman enjoy speedy recoveries and the side can look forward to getting back their early-season form.

Tomorrow in the league, fourth-placed Acle visit unbeaten leaders Beccles Town (ko 2pm).
